Insomnia-Seroquel or Zyprexa?

Posted by Tom Twilight on October 28, 2005, at 15:51:51

Hello all my babble friends

Marplan/Isocarboxazid is controling my depression and helping with Social Anxiety

Unfortunatly again insomnia is making my life hell!

Its not so much a problem of getting to sleep as a problem of maintaining sleep.

I feel very frustrated and disheartend

I know APs are not the first choice for insomnia, but although Zopiclone and other drugs get me to sleep, they don't keep me asleep.

I know that both Seroquel and Zyprexa can work for insomnia, the question is which one works best?

Also which one causes least daytime sedation/hangover?

Hello Tom :-)

I'd try Seroquel first, 25mg.

Either one. Best bet would be to try to get a sample of each and test them yourself to see which you like better.

I started on 2.5mg zyprexa 5 years ago. Increased to 5mg after a few months. Had the best sleep of my life. Any daytime sedation was pretty much gone in about a week or two. It took 5 years, but finally the good effects and the sedation pooped out on me. Am in the process of weaning off it without any probs so far.

Have also tried seroquel. It put me to sleep fine, but did not give me a full night's sleep like zyprexa did. Unlike zyprexa, seroquel causes some norepinephrine release, which seemed to wake me up very early. The morning dry mouth was intense.

I would say try one of them on one night, skip a night, try the other the next night, and then decide for yourself which one to fine tune.

Lunesta, if you haven't tried it, is worth a shot. I found ambien and the others pretty weak, but lunesta works better than the others for me.

Seroquel did the same for me . It woke me up after four hours of sleep. In the hospital they repeated the dose and all I felt was faint and drunk the next day. Also they gave me chloral hydrate and xanax. Fondly, Phillipa

A couple of your favourite drinks+10-20mgs Diazepam works wonders, and aleviates any hangover, without the fear of AP SEs

Cheers

Hi Ed, Alcohol causes night time waking for me too. I get off to sleep OK, but wake 3 hours later and have no further good sleep. Any more than 2 standard drinks seems to do that in a way I can notice.

Hi Dec

Alcohol prevents me from getting to sleep in the first place!

Some1 on here might know better, but I think you can try one on one day, and then the other on the next.

If you start with Seroquel, take 25mg. If it makes you too drowsy in day, cut pill in half at night.

Keep us updated.

Thanks for input everyone!

Thanks to all who contributed

I think I going to start with Zyprexa, instictivly I feel that it the one for me, but I could very well be wrong.

Unfortunatly my options are limmited because I having to order online, I don't think UK docs are very up for combining APs with MAOIs *sigh*
