Zyprexa weight gain

Posted by FredPotter on October 24, 2005, at 15:37:05

Some side effects wear off with time. Does anyone know if this is true of weight gain in Zyprexa? It works well for me with Celexa, but the weight gain is a problem. Perhaps ephedrine would suppress my appetite. However, I have a feeling the weight started increasing before any change in eating habits. Thanks
Fred

Once when I was at my doctor office, I overheard my doctor (outside the door) talking to a specialist about bipolar. He talked about how well Zyprexa worked for mania but my doctor said, " I just don't understand why it is that every person I put on this gains weight immediately."

I thought that was pretty telling (and I made a mental note to self to never take it, LOL).

Anyway, for some reason, certain meds make certain people gain weight but Zyprexa is one of those meds that makes a LOT of people gain weight.

I've only heard people can lose the weight once they stopped the meds.

I wonder if a doctor prescribed Wellbutrin with it, if that would make any difference (since Wellbutrin is kind of known for causing weight loss?).

For me the weight gain did subside gradually over a period of about 4 months until I stopped gaining and stabilized at a higher weight. I didnt gain substantially from zyprexa (but still more than I would have liked) so I couldnt say if my experience is near the norm.
Best regards, Bunny

There are some investigators looking at using amantadine (Symmetrel) as a drug to control the weight gain produced by Zyprexa.

I recently read about another medication to address the issue, but I can't seem to remember which one. I'll try to jog my memory.

Some people are crossing-over from Zyprexa to Abilify so that weight gain and diabetes is no longer an issue. Still, I remain impressed with the potency of Zyprexa as an augmentor of antidepressants.

Thanks Scott for youre reply, and everyone else. I asked my psychiatrist about Abilify, as it is weight neutral, but he said it's not available in NZ. The Amantadine info is very helpful thanks.

I too am extremely impressed with Zyprexa's ability to augment. I've been feeling "better than well" this last week (which is OK with me). However I'm afraid it will wear off. It did before when on 2.5 mg per day. Now I'm taking 5mg. I'm pretty fat now, but I'd rather be fat and happy Fred

I'm on 450 wellbutrin and 10 zyprexa and others but unfortunately the wellbutrin didn't help me to loose and of the weight i gained on zyprexa. :(
but that doesn't mean i couldn't work for others.

Zyprexa made me gain weight the first 5 years. But I went on a diet and lost most of the weight. I was taking 10 mg zyprexa. I also take wellbutrin sr with it now and find it helps.
