Hey there. I had my very first appointment with a "pdoc" (i just saw that on this forum today and think I like it) today and he gave me a months supply of effexor XR and I just want to say that I'm **cking scarred as hell. I've never been on any meds, other than booze, before in my life and reading all the side effects makes me want to vomit and I haven't even taken my first pill yet. But I have no choice. Hell, I'm so messed up I can't even work these days and I guess I've been puting this off for a few decades too long. This forum might help.

One of the people who used to come here told us about being in a drug trial, for a drug that had nothing whatsoever to do with psychiatric illness. He had recently stopped taking an antidepressant, and he experienced a relapse of depression during the course of the study. Because of this, "worsening depression" was listed as a side effect of the drug, even though his depression was totally unrelated to it. Keep that story in mind whenever you get scared by reading side effects.
Also, you're certainly not going to get *all* the side effects listed -- if you get any at all -- and, even if you do, most side effects are transitory, and will fade once you adjust to the medication.
I do understand being afraid of starting a drug, since I go through it myself, but I hope this has set your mind at ease a bit. Effexor can be a very good medication for many people. I hope you're one of them.

Thanks. My mother's husband has been on anti-depresents for the past 15 years and he told me to stop looking up side effects on the net because he found that he would get them just by reading and worring about them (phsycosymatic? sp?) so he just stopped and the side effects stopped.
Thanks again for you input.
