What does Lamictal rash look like?

Posted by Dinah on October 17, 2005, at 19:14:15

I'm itchy all over, especially my back. My husband says I have pin point size red dots, some raised, all over my back. I can't really see my back, so I can't tell.

I haven't increased my dose of Lamictal lately, I've been pretty steady for close to six weeks, I think. Maybe a bit less. But in the last two weeks I increased my Risperdal from 1 .25mg tablet whenever I needed it (less than ten a month) to six a day.

No fever, I'm pretty sure.

I am a bit swollen, and it's not cycle related. I do think I've been overeating lately, but looking at myself, my feet and places that retain water look decidedly swollen.

Should I have any concerns?

Dang it. It was working for migraines.

I've hardly taken any frova lately. :(

It looks like I'm supposed to stop the Lamictal at least until the rash goes away?

Dinah, from the Threads I've read. You have to start really low on lamictal. And the rash can be dangerous. Hope someone who knows will answer your Thread. And I'm sure you've already googled it. Hope you can stay on it if it's working for you. Fondly, Phillipa

Dinah,
I got itchy red dots on my upper arms and thighs after being on Lamictal at 75 mg for six weeks or so. It definitely started late, not when I first got to that dose. Now my pdoc says it's not related, but it got better when I lowered to 50 mg and came back after about two weeks back at 75 mg.

The nasty rash is one that blisters and burns, I think. Lamictal can cause other rashes that aren't as serious, and can be treated with typical dermatological stuff. Can you get a doc to check it?

gg

Thanks :) » Phillipa

I'm sure it's nothing, but to be on the safe side I'll stop taking it, and try to locate the doctor who prescribed it. I don't think my internist will know much about it. I *suppose* I could bother my pdoc with it, tho I hate to since it wasn't prescribed for psychiatric purposes.

It's just as likely a reaction to something I ate or the hep A or B vaccines.

I'm not going to worry about it, but I will stop it and see what happens.

Oh, and up my fluid intake to see if I can reduce my swelling.

Thanks gg.

My internist doesn't know much about this stuff, from my past experience. I keep thinking of trying to locate a new one, but I hate switching doctors.

I'm not going to worry too much about it, and I'll try to reach my neurologist. But I'm pretty sure her place of operations is shut down still.

It helps to get first hand info, thanks.

Dinah, I'm no meds expert but I really think you should get a doctor to look at it. Stopping a med cold turkey isn't always the right thing to do. Those swollen legs and ankles really concern me. You need to get checked out ASAP. That's just my opinion of course. But you don't need anything else. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Dinah,
In my case, the rash got a lot better just decreasing the med by 25 mg. Can you try that instead of stopping altogether?

gg

All I was taking was .25 mg. :)

I always take as little of anything that works, and since the .25 mg was working fine on the migraines, I never increased it to .5 mg.

How about a dermatologist? » Dinah

When I got a rash while taking Lamictal, my psychiatrist -- Dr CattleProd, which I mention solely because I enjoy calling him that -- referred me on to a dermatologist. He said that, even though he was prescribing it, a dermatologist was the best place to go to have it checked out. There are a lot of different rashes, apparently, which can be associated with Lamictal besides "The" rash.

In my case, it turned out not to be related, but it pleased me to have a definitive diagnosis of it anyway. Mostly because now there's a better chance of clearing it up. Even though I'm off the Lamictal, it's still here and buggin' me.

I hope you get it checked out, Miss Dinah. I want all of you to be as healthy as can be, for no reason beyond my affection for you.

I'm not completely sure, but I think that the rash may be due to raising the Risperdal dose. I think that Risperdal by itself would not cause a rash. But Lamictal is more prone to cause a rash when taken with certain other medications.

I guess your options would be reducing the Lamictal; reducing the Risperdal, or reducing both but by not as much.

But I'm not an expert on this.

The dermatologist should be able to help no matter what is causing it.

And I haven't had my annual mole check for two years now.

I'll see if my dermatologist is back. I've got a reasonable shot at her. She's in a nonflooded area, office wise.

Thanks, Racer. :)

I didn't see any mention of interaction, but I've stopped the Lamictal until I hear it's ok to start it again. I can't afford to stop the Risperdal.

Ordinarily I might not be so cautious, but I'm not sure about our emergency services here in the N.O. area, and I guess it pays to be safe rather than sorry.

Thanks. :)
