i which case would just using nicotene patches help? i am not going to lie to myself and take more anti-depressants. i have narcissistic personality disorder. i know this for sure. i just want to go to school and get a job and not be someone everyone hates. i am a disgusting individual and i never admit my faults and wrong doings, it is my responsibilty as a human being to change that. my problems are with just doing anything. i make everything hard, no matter what it is. i am comparing this to what is often referred to as executive functioning to see if it fits. i know nicotinic receptor activation and dopamine activity is meant to help this right? if nicotene patches can help, what doses would be effective? i do not deserve sympathy, this feeds my narcissism and i will be insulted if you offer it, please offer helpful opinion about nicotene patches. thank you sincerely.

I think your reaction to nicotine will depend on if and where in the brain you might experience dysfunction.

It is my vague recollection that nicotine can improve executive function in schizophrenia and ADHD. Administration of nicotine is known to sharpen attention and slightly enhance memory. It also produces a release of dopamine in reward centers in the brain. This might help with motivation.

Regarding narcissism, do you find that you collect or hoard things? If so, do you show them to anyone? I know someone who has been diagnosed as being narcissistic, and he does hoard things. However, he likes to show them to others and seems to take a certain amount of pride in doing so. From what I read, though, this desire to show people is inconsistent with the diagnosis.

I hope it doesn't insult you too much that I care enough to bother resonding to your posts.

Axis II disorders can be difficult to work with. It becomes many times harder if there is also an Axis I disorder going on at the same time. The presence of one does not preclude the existence of the other. You might be chronically dysthymic. This might account for your lack of motivation and energy. This is also a difficult condition to treat, but medication does help.

there have been studies noting improvement in ADHD with 7mg patches... i just went and bought 21mg patches, so now i should probably go back and buy the others... i just have a very poor ability to notice how things are affecting me. i'm not sure if i will be able to notice any improvement even if there is any... its like i have permanent wet blanket over me... ugh. but i guess starting at 21 would be the worst idea as if i do that and the addicting-type effects settle i won't have a chance of knowing whether 7mg would have helped me. not to mention overstimulation may make things worse.... ugh. i just don't know what to do. i need a solution now. my schoolwork is in such a desperate situation now... do you think starting at 7mg for a few days would be best... then i increase to 14mg in 3 days if i think its not improving or i need more improvement? does that sound good? or should i wait longer... ugh... :( i wish i knew what to do. anyways, yes, i hoard things like crazy, my whole apartment is piles and piles of crap and i find extreme difficulty being able to throw ANYTHING away. i intend to answer the other stuff in your message but i feel like i am going nuts here, i can't stop moving and i need to go and do something that makes me feel like im doing something. ugh... i'm probably going to go eat pizza. even though the clothes i'm in havent been washed in a week and i prolly stink... ugh. i need a replacement brain, i can't get myself to do anything useful properly.

Hello.

I am so aggravated with myself. I composed a lengthy post addressing some of the values of using nicotine therapeutically. I never confirmed the submission. ($%^#(&*(^@!!!

Anyway, here is an article that I think is worth taking a look at:

http://www.pubmedcentral.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=15582913

I'll be away for a few weeks. I don't know if I will have access to a computer. I can't lend any insight into how to go about treating yourself with nicotine. If I have time, I'll see what I can find on Medline. In the meantime, you might want to look into using Klonopin to ease your agitation.

Have you ever tried taking a stimulant?

Be well.

I too can really identify with what you're feeling. You sound depressed, as simple as that.

What medication are you taking?
