Why XANAX is potentially an abuse drug?

Posted by eve70 on September 11, 2005, at 9:05:18

Hi,
I was asking why Xanax is considerated the most potentially abuse drug, much more than other Benzos.
I personally did not feel great difference between Xanax and other ansiolytic benzo. The most relevant difference was that is that its effect vanish quickly within few hours.
It is supposed to elevate mood? To make you more socialyzer?
Could anyone share someting about this matter?
Thanks very much to you all!
eve

My sister's pdoc would not prescribe her xanax b/c of the high risk for addiction and abuse. He placed her on effexor xr. I thought that was far worse but what do I know... I am the one on all the meds anyway... I have been on Xanax for awhile and find I do not have cravings or anything for it. I have panic attacks and true overwhelming anxiety attacks (mostly at work) and the xanax is my safe haven. It quickly blankets and brings a rush of releif and I think if you don't need the relief it maybe becomes a high for others. During that high; they really don't know what is going on, makes it easier to talk to people... they don't know really what is going on... and are far more open... Hope this helps... I know it didn't really answer your question... but I tried...

I don't understand it's chemical mechanisms and how they are different but I do know Xanex hits you much faster (and leaves you much quicker) which would increase your need for it (if not used occasionally).

I have taken Xanex, Klonopin (hated it!), and Ativan (first time i took it, it actually gave me a panic attack, how weird is that? ROFL).

Anyway, Xanex is the only thing I have ever taken that could stop a panic attack in it's tracks. I've only had a handful of full blown attacks (thankfully) but when I did, Xanex was my miracle drug!

Ativan helped me when I was having overall anxiety (after I got used to it) but for some reason, my dr. was not too keen on using Ativan. My doctor has no problem prescribing Xanex or Klonopin (freely) but I realized after awhile, if I would learn to breathe (and talk myself through it) I can generally avoid medicine for anxiety.

The only time I feel that overwhelming anxiety is when I have a high fever (oddly enough).

I completely rambled and hijacked your question. I apologize. LOL

Xanax is alcohol in a pill, I have taken several benzos, and xanax causes initial euphoris, then calming, then sleep-just like Alcohol, it only lasts for ~4 hours requiring rrequant doses-avoid the stuff.

Cheers

Xanax does open you up, just like Klonopin does. Paul is right, Xanax is alcohol in prescribed doses. Sorry. My doctor is afraid to prescribe Xanax i dont blaim him.

Xanax is similar to a drug back in the 70's and 80's called Quualude which was removed from the Market it in 1985 in the US.

we humans can become addicted to anything on this planet, including any drug.

speaking just for myself, i think the reputations of xanax and klonopin are grossly overrated. the people i know taking them (including myself) have no problems with them. i am taking less today (1 mg) than when i started 8 years ago (3) on klonopin. for me, klonopin is a miracle drug and has been great!

i do think xanax and klonopin along with any other drug are very dangerous for ppl who obtain them for recreational use. that is where the horror stories come in ...

Thanks you all for your help share! (nm)
