Wellbutrin SR and pregnancy?

Posted by april8 on August 1, 2005, at 16:21:29

Hi my partner and I are trying to have a baby and I wondered if anyone know if Wellbutrin SR is safe to take while pregnant?

I hope so because that is what I am on!

I don't know what the patient literature says about it, but I would definitely hesitate to take it while pregnant.

There is some research that babies go through withdrawals after birth when their mother's took these meds.

But I was one of those ladies who was scared to even take a tylenol for a headache when pregnant. So maybe I was a bit overboard.

Spriggy is right, there is growing evidence that it can cause the baby to go through withdrawls. Caffiene can cause problems, so I would imagine that wellbutrin can too.

I think that most docs say that you need to weigh the risks and benefits of taking a med during pregnancy. They don't *think* that it does anything major to the baby, but also they suggest you go off unless it is clear that you need it. Like if you are going to become severely depressed so that you can't function, it is probably a bad idea to stop it.

Here are some questions that might help you sort it out. If you would like, you can post some answers and maybe people will have more input for you:

How long have you been on wellbutrin? Why? Have you tried to address your difficulties through non-medication means (like therapy?)Are you hesitant to go off of WB? Why? Is this a particularly stressful time in your life? If so, are you in a good place to have a kid right now?

Some people compromise and don't take the medication during the 1st 3 months of pregnancy b/c that is when a lot of the baby's organs etc are forming. Of course, that would require you to be off of it while you are trying to get pregnant too.

Good luck,
EE

Hi - your post caught my eye because 1) I'm on Wellbutrin SR, and 2) April 8 is my birthday! :)

This is definitely something you should talk about with both your OB/GYN and your psychiatrist. The only AD I know of that's 'safe' during pregnancy is Prozac. There might be more - again, discuss with your pdoc & OB/GYN. (oh, and take prenatal vitamins once you start trying!!!) Also keep in mind the effects of ADs on the baby postpartum - it generally isn't advisable to breastfeed.

I went off of my AD when my husband & I started trying to conceive (I was on Celexa at the time). Keep in mind that it can take a while - it took us 2 1/2 years. In my case, my depression (MDD) luckily stayed in remission the whole time... but it resurfaced post-partum though and 18 months later it's still going strong (Wellbutrin is helping A LOT though).

from WebMD:

"This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

If this medication is used during the last 3 months of pregnancy, infrequently your newborn may develop symptoms including feeding or breathing difficulties, seizures, muscle stiffness, jitteriness, or constant crying. However, do not stop taking this medication unless your doctor directs you to do so. Report any such symptoms to your doctor promptly.

Bupropion passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while using this drug."
