I was wondering what is the legal amount of xanax a doctor can prescribe for patients with anxiety? My doctor said he cannot give me any more than he does at the 2mg dose.

So do you mean they can only give you 90 of the 2mg xanax per month? Like 3 a day? And it be legal and anything above that is illegal?

This is from Rxlist.com;
"The suggested total daily dose ranges between 3 to 6mg/day.Dosage should be individualized for maximum beneficial effect. While the suggested total daily dosages given will meet the needs of most patients, there will be some patients who require doses greater than 6 mg/day. In such cases, dosage should be increased cautiously to avoid adverse effects.
Dose Titration
Treatment with XANAX XR may be initiated with a dose of 0.5 mg to 1 mg once daily. Depending on the response, the dose may be increased at intervals of 3 to 4 days in increments of no more than 1 mg/day. Slower titration to the dose levels may be advisable to allow full expression of the pharmacodynamic effect of XANAX XR.
Generally, therapy should be initiated at a low dose to minimize the risk of adverse responses in patients especially sensitive to the drug. Dose should be advanced until an acceptable therapeutic response (ie, a substantial reduction in or total elimination of panic attacks) is achieved, intolerance occurs, or the maximum recommended dose is attained."

He is obviously a liar and a benzophobic.
People can take up to 6-8mg a day. That is within therapeutic range.
Your doctor is being a naughty man and telling fibs. Tell him to chat to me, and I will sort him out!
Cause Xanax is a great drug.

All I know is that when I took xanax my old[bad one]used to Rx l20 lmg tabs a month. Let's see that would be 4mg a day I believe. I never took more than 2.5 or 3mg a day. Eventually it stopped relieving panic and just made me tired. I have quite a supply left over. Fondly, Phillipa

In the US, I believe regulations over Schedule IV drugs is variable state to state. Maybe your best source of info would be from a pharmacist in your area.
Did you inquire from your doc the reason for them prescribing as they did for you? If you think this is not a therapeudic dose for you, do you think your doc will work with you? If not and you use Xanax approiately, maybe you need to look into a new doc.
I think there are a number of reasons benzos seem to be such a touchy, sticky subject. Most of these reasons were not borne out of thin air. Nor do I believe out of a desire to not adequately treat people who use approiately and really benefit from these meds. There are liability issues and there are societal issues. I don’t think we can deny there is abuse potential and tolerance problems. I think those are some of factors that have made it difficult on approiate users. From most folks, benzos do what they promise – that’s the good news, but it’s, in a fashion, also the bad news.

Maximum daily dosage is 8mg or 2 mg taken 4 times a day. This is taken from the prescribing information on Xanax issued by its manafacturer.
This is the end of the thread.
