MAOI diet -- the modern way

Dietary restrictions when taking a MAOI are very harsh. There has been some research lately which provides a less restrictive and much easier to follow dietary plan. While taking 160 md/die of Parnate I have adhered to these new suggestions and never had any problems with blood pressure. Details can be found in the article:

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Many monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) diets are considered to be excessively restrictive and founded on poor scientific evidence. We present a safe and practical MAOI diet based on the related clinical and analytic data. METHOD: We used a critical review of the literature and our own tyramine assay results to categorize foods to be restricted absolutely, taken in moderation only, or unrestricted. RESULTS: We recommend that users avoid aged cheese; aged or cured meats (e.g., air-dried sausage); any potentially spoiled meat, poultry, or fish; broad (fava) bean pods; Marmite concentrated yeast extract; sauerkraut; soy sauce and soy bean condiments; and tap beer. Wine and domestic bottled or canned beer are considered safe when consumed in moderation. Other foods not mentioned are considered unrestricted. CONCLUSION: The concerns about perpetuating an overly restrictive MAOI diet include the avoidance by prescribers of a potentially useful treatment option, excessive limitations on lifestyle for patients, and increased risk to patients secondary to noncompliance with the diet. We propose an MAOI diet that has a solid scientific and clinical basis and that is, above all, practical.

what is yeast extract? isn't that in all flour products. I've read a lot of labels of like pasta, cookies, bread, all sorts of things. They all say yeast extract. Can I not eat any of these things?

Hi,

Pasta and bread are fine.

Certain yeast extacts such as Marmite spread must be avoided.

Autolyzed yeast extract is a substance used to bind flavoring. It's not the same as yeast as in breads and other yeast-based carbs. You find yeast extract a lot in processed commercial foods such as frozen dinners, etc. and in sauces, gravies, marinades, etc.

I stayed away from it early on, but now I don't even look for it on packages because it's EVERYWHERE! And I have not had a reaction to eating foods with this ingredient, as the quantity in most foods is less than 2 percent.

HOWEVER, Marmite and Vegemite contain very high quantities of yeast extract and must be avoided.

Ok, thanks. That helps a lot. It had me worried because that stuff is in a lot of food.

When I was on an MAOI I avoided cheese, salami and similar sausage, and fava beans (only an issue once). I couldn't eat pizza, although some people on this board said the cheese on Pizza Hut-type pizza isn't real cheese. I didn't have any problems with soy sauce. I don't drink very much, so the beer restriction wasn't an issue either.

I have seen modern versions of the diet that excluded Brewers Yeast. Sunnybrook says it's ok. Anyone on an MAOI have any problems with Brewers Yeast?

Hi Declan,

The package inserts contain all of the old guidelines. They have not been updated with new information. I believe that tyramine tests have shown that several things on the old lists really aren't a problem. Read the Sunnybrook study and Elizabeth's post here at babble for the more recent guidelines before deciding what is safe and what isn't. The message from SLS in this thread contains a link that has a very long and thorough discussion of the diet.

Most people don't live long in my family.

But my grandmother took brewers yeast every day. She lived to be 94.

She also took snuff everyday from the age of 14. (I asked her).

I wonder which one to take?
