PAXIL

Posted by Rea1 on June 26, 2005, at 21:00:10

My doc has just prescribed Paxil for my GAD. Just looking for anyone who has had experience with this med and how it went for you.

Thx,
Andrea

Hi Andrea. I was first prescibed this med in 1997 for extreme GAD and OCD. It was the first AD that I ever took. I used it for about 2 years and I must say that it made a HUGE difference in my anxiety and overall mood. I felt so much better emotionally while I was on it. However, I did notice that it made me very sleepy and somewhat amotivated. Plus I think I gained a few pounds. That's why I eventually switched over to Celexa. But for starters, I think it's probably a very good drug. It definitely got me out of a very dark place and may have even saved my life at the time. Good luck to you! Jess

10mg a day and xanax helped me the first time. When I stopped it it never worked again. Fondly, Phillipa

When I switched from Effexor to Paxil, within a week I started having panicky feelings. I don't know if it was FROM the Paxil or if it was just Effexor withdrawal.

I feel paxil rewired my brain permanently, I had no problem with withdrawal or anything, the drug just had a toxic effect on my I guess. I don't even wanna get into it, I've reiterated the details about my experience about 1000 times and hardly anyone can relate or offer advice that would alleviate the problems caused by paxil.

well i've been taking 10 mg a day now for a week. i was completely amazed because the very next morning i noticed the difference. i woke up for the first time without feeling like i had just been hit by a brick wall of anxiety. i could feel anxiety trying to rise but it would never get as intense as it had before. i've been able to recognize some of my triggers and i can actually tell myself, "that's not your problem you dont have to worry about it" and i WONT worry about it...something i wasnt able to do in the past. i wasnt expecting to see any kind of results for at least a couple of weeks. i guess we'll see how it goes.....so far so good tho....

I'm glad for you. I've heard Paxil is good for anxiety. It had the opposite effect for me - unless it wasn't the Paxil and was just Effexor withdrawal causing my increased fear and panic. It caused me some pretty severe restless legs, though. Not as bad on Paxil CR as on regular Paxil.

anyone i know that has been given Paxil to treat depression, has experienced some sort of tremors or shakes and said it really messed with their heads. i was diagnosed with epilepsy over 15 yrs ago(petit mal), and what was causing my seizures was a "short circuit" in my brain. i would get an overload of info and my brain would "freeze up" much like a computer. so essentially i was not receiving the messages i was sending which caused a great deal of anxiety. with an ssri like paxil i am able to get the messages and think more clearly. it seems reasonable to me that if you do not have problems with your neurotransmitters, you would get the opposite effect......just guessing....and could you tell me what the difference between paxil and paxil cr is? thank you....Rea

Paxil CR is controlled release. It was supposed to be easier to tolerate as far as side effects since it didn't hit your system all at once and dissolved (I think) in the intestine instead of in the stomach. The dosage was slightly different - my tabs were for 12.5 mg I think.
