Ok, so I just read an article that showed that night workers are at a higher risk of developing cancers because their melatonin secretion was out of whack.
But then, I realized that SSRI's reduce melatonin secretion as well. Will somebody please work me out of this one ??

Hi Linkadge.
Which of the following symptoms predominate? Perhaps you can rearrange them in the order of significance or magnitude.• agitated
• anergia
• anhedonia
• anxiety
• dysphoria
• impaired concentration
• impaired memory
• loss of interest
• loss of motivation
• melancholia
• psychomotor retardation
I bet you are:• melancholic
• agitated
• have an overactive HPA axis
• a tricyclic responder

Doesn't Luvox increase melatonin?

How about just adding some 5-HTP? It is a precursor for both serotonin and melatonin.
We might see agomelatine (Valdoxan) come to market one day. It is a melatonin receptor agonist along with being an antagonist at 5-HT2c receptors. Pretty cool. It might help increase DA and NE activity in frontal cortical pathways.
All is not lost.

I don't know if SAM-e increases melatonin, but if it did, and I was concerned about a decrease in melatonin, I'd take it because it's beneficial for your liver and helps with chronic pain. It is just a bit pricey though, and you do have to get a good brand.

perhaps, but I've only tried one, and now the doctor wants to get rid of it.
Don't you see why I give up though. You think it is so simple to get the pills but I don't know how. I just don't know how. I need an advocate or something. Somebody who knows what I am like and can tell the doctor what to give me. He aint listening to me. That coupled with the excuciating waiting time, and the anticipatory anxiety for the doctors visits, makes my life a living hell.Like I said, I know what might help, but the 8 minaute appointment paxil and zyprexa doctors are driving me insane.
I'm not going to increase my zoloft. I won't! It significantly worsens my HPA dysregulation. That disregulation does not get better over time. Clomipramin didn't do this. It just gave me hallucinations.
They lable you as a complainer. After that, you're screwed.
I just **can't** find anyone who will listen to me. You guys are great, but you don't have the ability to write prescriptions. And the counsellers aren't too great cause they don't know their meds and leave that stuff to the doctors.

Hi, Linkadge.
I've also read several studies suggesting that disruption of night-time melatonin might promote tumor growth. I've known many nurses who worked the night shift for years. Several of those nurses did develop breast cancer, but each of those women had other, probably more significant, risk factors, including poor diet, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles. One of them had a family history of breast cancer, and another drank too much alcohol. Although it's very important to keep on reading the research and to stay as well informed as we can possibly be, you also have to remember that you can drive yourself nuts with the "medical student syndrome" of coming down with, or fearing you'll come down with, every single disease you read about. Also, in a few days or a few weeks, more studies will be published that contradict what we read today. So, what should we do? I think we just have to do the best can can do. Try to eat as healthfully as we can. Exercise consistently and get plenty of rest. Don't smoke, etc. etc. What else can we do?

It's nice advice, but I rather get a tumor knowing I tried to avoid it than get one that I saw coming and said "oh well".
Thats why I think the SSRI's are like smoking. You like the effect so much that you are blind to the fact that it may be killing you.
I am *finally* getting sleep off of them. I havn't atually slept in 5 years. THe kind of sleep where you don't remember every 10th second.

-- I slept very poorly on ssri's also, but I've met others here who sleep very well on them.

Link when I first started nursing I had to work nights. I gained 5 lbs in a week. A lot of night workers are overweight. Everything is so quiet that all the nurses do is eat. Unless you work on a surgical floor where the pts are up all night wanting something for pain. Fondly, Phillipa

There is a correlation between melatonin abnormalties and various cancers. I was under the impression that SSRI's could interact with melatonin secretion via 5-ht2a.
