Lexapro dosage for panic and GAD?

Posted by chess on April 15, 2005, at 14:27:08

I'm at 20mg of Lexapro for about 6 weeks now but it hasn't really helped alot yet.
I'm wondering if anyone has had success with Lexapro for panic and GAD, at what dosage, and how long did it take until that dosage worked for you?
Thanks!

I took it for 6 weeks- it helped with my panic attacks but it made my other anxiety issues much worse and increased depression for me.

However, I may be Bipolar so that would explain my reaction to it since it's an SSRI.

My mom took Lexapro (10 mg) for awhile. She didn't think it was strong enough for her anxiety and asked to start Cymbalta- she seems to like it much more.

I also prefer Cymbalta to Lexapro.

... i asked my doc about Cymbalta, but she said she would try me on EffexorXR next if Lexapro doesn't help.
Aren't EffexorXR and Cymbalta similar in effect?
Is one better than the other for panic and GAD?
Thanks!

Hi -
I started Lexapro about two months ago for GAD, and I've just in the past two or three weeks started feeling really good about life again, with almost no anxiety. I'm on 10 mg. Hope this helps!

Cymbalta is supposed to be a cleaner Effexor and they target both serotonin and norepinephrine. Supposedly less side effects. Others on the board are having very good results on it. Fondly, Phillipa

I wonder if your pdoc is hesitant to use the cymbalta b/c it is newer. I sensed that my pdoc was.

I take 40mg of Lex for depression and GAD. I have only had a partial response, but it does help. I don't remember how long it too to kick in. You may need a little more to feel an effect. Anxiety often requires a larger dose than depression.
