I just got my blood work results in the mail.
Here is what is strange..
My tsh was at 5.
It is showing now at 1.37 (which would be "normal?")
BUT my T3 uptake is High out of range. It shows it at 43 and the normal range is 24.2-34.
What would that mean to have a high t3 uptake.

Spriggy;
I have been following your posts, we've very similar! I just went to a Thyroidologist (endo specializing in only thyroid) and started taking Synthroid for hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, Goiter, you name it I got it. Family history of thyroid disorder plus being bipolar on lithium has made my thyroid very unhappy.
Along with your weird thing - my TSH:
Jan 2.4
Feb 5.1
Mar 2.7
Apr 4.3I didn't start the synthroid until March. Found this site today, talking about why there may be variations. Hope it helps you.

I think I heard someone on the board mention about.com - the thyroid information there is pretty helpful and covers a good deal.
Hope you are feeling better!

Okay, thank you so much for that link. That explains a lot.
I can't wait to hear what the endocronologist says about all this.
From what my husband just read up on it- an elevated t3 uptake is a sign of hypERthyroid and or Graves Disease. We shall see..
It's at least nice to have a test that does show something on paper is not right!

Oh sh*t. I see I have pissed you off. I am no longer part of the smart club.
Runs off to grab dunce cap and sits in the corner.
Sigh.

Larry,
My endo doesn't even bother to measure my T3. He says he doesn't need to. That he can tell that it's fine based on my Free T4. Is this true? I thought both had to be measured.

They do. A complete thyroid panel is the only way to tell if the thyroid is producing the right amt of hormones the way it should. I always insist on a complete thyroid panel. The TSH is just thyroid stimulating hormone. Fondly, Phillipa

That's what I thought. But not according to Dr. Macho know it all.

TSH and Free T4 most likely define your thyroid status, but there are T4-T3 conversion disorders.
If he ruled those out, once upon a time, I suppose it doesn't matter, for routine work. But thyroid disorders are notorious for changing spots, and every 3 years he should do the whole panel again, IMHO.

I wanted to inlcude your name, Tamaras name, Gabbi's name, Eds name, and SLS's name but I ran out of room.
Get out of the corner, get that silly hat off (besides, it's not your style), and come over here and give me some of that incredible knowledge.

Hi Larry. He has only seen me 3 times now. He has never done anything more than the TSH and the T4 even though I told him that years ago it showed that I had a lot of antibodies. His response was "everyone has antibodies".

Thanks Spriggy. :-) I am very bitchy and sarcastic right now as a result of yesterday's appointment. Then "CK" post threw me over the edge.
There is a really good book you should read. It's called "The Thyroid Solution". What I like most about the book is the way it links anxiety and depression to thyroid problems. And it turns no one seems to know what comes first. Sometimes depression can cause a thyroid problem. Or a stressful event. So the author writes about how it's important to receive therapy for a thryoid problem. It really links the mind and body very well. Plus it has all the information of the different tests etc. I highly recommend it.
I'm sorry I was snotty towards you yesterday. It wasn't you. It was my doctor.
Anyhow, there is nothing I can do about it.

I really enjoyed that book, too. Unfortunately, even following the advice there (and on some thyroid boards) my docs still weren't able to come up with anything (except that I have nodules, but they're not doing anything naughty right now). Still, I'm glad I had the tests done that they did do, and I won't hesitate to go down that path again if things get really bad again. Finding an effective AD seems to have helped for now, so I'm assuming for now that I had pseudo-Cushing's.
Don't give up on the endo thing until or unless it seems like the right thing to do. Also, have you seen you OBGYN and had your female hormones checked. Or is the endo doing that for you?

The great thing about thoughtless statements like that is that they can sorta validate what you're saying, in an over-the-top way.

>ROTFL! Oh surely you jest! My endo doing any other test than a TSH? Hee-hee, snort!
I don't have an OBGYN and it's highly unlikely I would find one in Montreal who is accepting patients. My GP has her nose out of joint because I started to see an endocrinologist (she was managing my thryoid meds until I started to see him this time last year). How would I get her to do any hormone tests? On what basis? (not a rhetorical question, if you know how please let me know!).

>I hadn't thought of it that way! Thank you! Actually this was the person who put me down when I said I would have to wait for new ADs to come out. CK responded that there are probably countless meds and combos that I haven't tried. Funny, when I said I had been on at least 43 he/she didn't post back.
You are very wise! Thank you.

I mean that seems like a female hormone thing to me! BTW (if you don't mind), how old are you? Do you have regular, fairly normal periods? (Sorry if I ask something that I've asked before. Minnie's memory ain't what it used to be.)

Oh right! Well I did get my endo to at least give me a blood req for my prolactin level but that's all. He said I have to wait 6-8 weeks before I get the blood test because of the Desipramine. He also said to have it done one week after my period ends and not to manipulate my breast the night before or morning of the test(otay). I am 36 years old. I have lactated on any meds that raise one's prolactin level, so I didn't start lactating out of the blue. I am on the pill so my period is regular but that is why I take the pill ... to regulate my periods. I need to regulate my period because of history of an eating disorder (I didn't have it for a while).
So that's it.
