Someone please talk to me. I tried to look this up on the web but no luck.
My pdoc said I was hypomanic when he saw me on yesterday, and on Tues and Weds I was totally happy all day. But yesterday and today I was only happy in the morning. Now I don't feel happy, or sad, only sort of wired. I woke up at 6:30 this morning, which I never do. But I just took a nap. I feel like I can't sit still, I feel sort of wired, but just not that euphoric feeling. But not angry either.
So, do you have to feel happy all day to be hypomanic? Or does feeling that way in the morning count? I'd really like to know what to record in my mood journal.
thanks,
dm

Hi D,
Just write down what you're experiencing in your mood diary; you did an excellent job in your post. Sometimes hypomania manifests in the wonderful feelings you described a week or so ago; sometimes you'll feel wired (and tired); and sometimes you may feel irritable and angry, swinging through the spectrum of being the life of the party one minute and totally depressed or desperate-feeling half an hour later. I think everything you're experiencing is "normal" for those of us with bipolar II disorder. :-)
Best of wishes to you -- I'm thinking good thoughts for you as you go through this.
Mark H.
P. S. If some of us sound a little wistful, it's because we long for those hypomanic days when it's all wonderful and possible and everything fits together with perfection....

Hypomania comes in many forms. I've posted this link many time, but I think you will find it helpful.http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/frameset.html It tells you all the different states you can be in. It could be you are coming down now or maybe you are a rapid cycler and will go through several moods in one days.
For me the worst is when I am in a mixed state - depressed and hypomanic.
Hope you find the link useful.

I don't have good hypomania. I have super horrible agitated, restless mania. I WISH and long for the euphoric type.
I go from that, to feeling depressed to feeling utterly depressed back to the anxiety state.
So be blessed to know you hit the happy times.

I know this is not fair to those of you who struggle with moods that are up and down. But, it really would be nice to be hypomanic for a day. That to me would be like what it feels to most people who are full of energy and happy, and enjoying life. Just a dream. Fondly, Phillipa

You could chart four separate dimensions of your moods--
anxiety
depression
elation
irritability--at any one time.
so you can record the various ways your moods change and combine. Maybe do it at least twice a day....

And also chart how many hours of sleep you get and when you get your period (you are female right?). It's interesting to look at it over a month. For instance I get hypomanic 3 days before the full moon. I never would have know if I hadn't been doing the mood charts. Since I get the nasty hypomania, I take Thorazine 4 days before the full moon and the next night as well. That's all my body can handle before I start to lactate.
Oh crap. I read the last two sentences and realise that I am a freak.

Who is more of an odd one-- a person whose moods and health follow the rhythms of nature, or whose moods, life and health revolve around things like the stock market?? I think of my father..

Well everything was okay until I got to the lactating part and then I realised that I really am messed up.

So I wonder why my pdoc didn't put me on a mood stabilizer? I guess he's hoping the cutting back on the Cymbalta will help. I'm also taking Serodquel, which doesn't seem to be working as a mood stabilizer for me.
Maxime, I feel like I'm a freak of nature when I hallucinate. :-P But you know what, everyone is a little freaky in their own way. Thats what makes the world such an interesting place.
Thank you all for writing back to me. I really needed someone to talk to because right now I'm a little ball of burning energy and, well, you understand.
Thanks,
dm

Hi.
Some pdocs use seroquel and other atypical anti-psychotics as mood stabilisers. But if it turns out that you are a rapid cycler sometimes it is best for you not to be on an AD at all.
Do you really hallucinate? When does that happen?
I only ask because that COULD indicate that you are bipolar Type 1. I've had auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed so I know how scary it is.Maxime

> Do you really hallucinate? When does that happen?
> I only ask because that COULD indicate that you are bipolar Type 1.Yeah, I have for real auditory hallucinations. This last set started about this time last month. At that time I thought I could be schizoaffective. But now I realize that I was also getting more depressed at the same time. About a week after the hallucinations started again, I was really, deeply depressed. Thats when my pdoc put me on Cymbalta and I went hypomanic, yay! I'm still having hallucinations (had some today).
My pdoc says that he "couldn't say" what type of bipolar I am. Just that I'm bipolar with psychotic features. I've never been truly manic, but that could always change I guess. Especially since thia ia the first recorded time that I've been hypomanic for more that one day.
So, if I was bipolar 1, would that mean the Seroquel wouldn't work for me?
