why does adderall work better on an empty stomach?

Posted by CareBear04 on March 24, 2005, at 14:00:27

has anyone else noticed this? i take adderall xr in the mornings. when i take it after breakfast or eat soon after taking it, i can't feel it work very well, and i feel more tired and less focused throughout the whole day. when i take adderall on an empty stomach and wait for an hour before eating, i find that i can feel it start working, and when an hour has gone by, i don't usually feel hungry even if i was before. the drug feels more potent throughout the day, and it lasts longer so that i don't have to take a second dose until later. this way also suppresses my appetite a lot more.
i've read that eating high-fat breakfast after taking adderall slows down the absoprtion. but if that's all there is, wouldn't it just take longer for the adderall to start working but still have the same effect for the rest of the day? my experience says there's something more to it.
does anyone know anything about this?

personally, I've found that eating it on an empty stomach (or as empty as possible) really maximizes adderall's "oomph". The only exception to this is that if you're dieting hardcore the adderall will stop working as well in part b/c of the highly acidic nature of the stomach after prolonged fasting. Other than that...I've always been under the impression that most foods not only delay absorption, but reduce the amount of med absorbed.

I agree with med-empowered. I would like to know why too. Fondly, Phillipa
