Something that won’t make you fat or cause seizure

Posted by draisy on March 9, 2005, at 0:18:40

Can anyone please answer me this?

Are there any antidepressants out there that won’t cause weight gain (weight loss is okay) and won’t make you have seizures??

I was on Wellbutrin, lost five lbs, looked great, felt amazing. I was so grateful, and it all ended abruptly when I woke up in hospital after a major seizure.

Went on celexa and effexor at different times, put on lots of weight and was sexually dysfunctional, which, of course, voided out the therapeutic effects of these two drugs.

I have been off everything for 9 months now. I miss Wellbutrin more than I can say.

I'm fairly sure i'm not the only one with these questions (i think)

Hi,

What dose of Wellbutrin were you on? Did you try a lower dose for a few weeks/months to see whether you would benefit?

Were you on any other medication at the same time?
Did the doctors suggest any other reason that you might have had a seizure apart from Wellbutrin?

Did any of these factors apply to you while taking Wellbutrin?..................

*history of seizures (before Wellbutrin)
*have an eating disorder
*have a brain tumour, benign or malignant
*you had recently withdrawn from alcohol or a benzodiazepine
*alcohol abuse
*history of head trauma
*diabetes

tried a lower dose and was fine. Dr raised dose. i was on 400mg and was drinking the week it happened (nobody told me i couldn't drink when on wellbutrin). but 'no' to the rest of the questions. i actually know two other people who seized on wellbutrin so i think the seizure rate is higher than they claim.

Hello,

I don't think your pdoc would ever prescribe 400mg again but there's a chance that you might be able to encourage your doctor to prescribe a lower dose. The risk of seizures is much lower with low doses of Wellbutrin. You wouldn't be able to drive though, because of the risk of a seizure.

>tried a lower dose and was fine

Why did you take 400mg if you were fine on a lower dose?

What other antidepressants have you tried? How did you respond?

Ed.

I;m guessing such a high dose with alcohol could've contributed. Why not try a lower dose with no alcohol and see how you feel?

Hi draisy:
Ask your pdoc. 'anti-seizure' meds., such as Depakote, Tegretol/Trileptal, Lamictal and among others listed on the 'web' below.

In my knowledge, if you get 'seizure' problem from taking 'more' than an average dosage/300 mg. Wellburtrin, then you may need to take 'anti-seizure' med. to counteract.

However, I'm NOT quite sure to suggest you on this method,.... 'anti-seizure' med. and WB' combo. First of all, you need to discuss this problem with your rx'ed doc. and mention about 'seizure' problem due to WB 400 mg.

Here is a good web-site regarding 'all' about 'seizure meds.' and select which one is best for you, since you don't want to see 'weight' gain.
