Hi, everyone! I'm new around here, but have had a long history with anxiety. I've been on Paxil for 7 years (I'm almost 26) and just started 100mg of Wellbutrin today. I've always had some side effects with Paxil that I thought I could just deal with and didn't want to "upset" because the Paxil REALLY helps me not have panic attacks. I am now completely frustrated with the low, low, low, sex drive and the 20 pound weight gain. My doc recommended trying Wellbutrin. What can I expect on this drug? I would like to keep the dosage low because I just worry about taking too many medications. If you have any experience with Wellbutrin and Paxil, I would love to hear your thoughts, especially regarding increased sex drive and loss of weight.

I had good results with paxil l0mg for about 2 l/2 years. Then I went off of it. It never worked again, but I never gained any wt on it. I tried wellbutrin l50mg for about a week and it was so energizing that I ended up in the hospital. I'm not trying to scare you as many posters love the energizing effects of wellbutrin. I did a Celxea/Wellbutrin combo and a Prozac/ Wellbutrin combo, both for about 5 months. I still gained weight over that year-long period, about 10-15 pounds, if I recall correctly. I took the Wellbutrin to counteract the fatiguing aspects of the SSRIs, and it seemed to do that okay. I too suffer greatly from anxiety/panic. Those combos seemed to keep the anxiety at bay. But...I don't think I could do Wellbutrin alone. It's too stimulating for me, pushes me toward anxiety or panic attack. However, everyone is different. I suppose there's no real harm in trying the Wellbutrin alone, just to see how it affects you. In terms of the sex thing, I am a guy, and I had anorgasmia on SSRIs alone, and combined with Wellbutrin. The Wellbutrin, sorry to say, did not increase my sex drive or increase my ability to have an orgasm. I know my psychiatrist said it might, but it did not have that effect on me.

Maybe if you did a combo of Paxil WITH wellbutrin you would have the perfect combo, especially since Paxil has helped so much with panic attacks.
I also have had panic attacks, and hate to tell you this, but wellbutrin (according to the psych at the hospital I saw) is NOT the medication of choice for those with anxiety/panic attacks.
It tends to produce anxiety. When I was on it, I could not eat, sleep, I paced the floor. My anxiety went through the roof.
Now... if you like the feeling of "speed", you may enjoy it. I don't particularly like that feeling but you will likely lose weight.
I lost weight but it was becuase it totally killed ANY appetite I had.
For four days I could NOT eat. My husband would have to force me to eat half of a banana (in one whole day that's all I could stand!).
BUT, maybe if you tried Wellbutrin and asked for a benzo for the initial start up in case you have anxiety. Sometimes, I have heard people say, the anxiety subsides and you feel much better.
I'm just a whimp and didn't stick it out long enough.

I definitely plan on staying on the Paxil WITH Wellbutrin. Paxil has really worked for my anxiety!

Hello,
I lost my sex drive when I went on Paxil six years ago and it never came back, even when I stopped the Paxil! My last SSRI was citalopram, which I discontinued about 3 months ago. I'm not saying my problems are related to Paxil, they're probably not, I'm just commenting. Don't let my post worry you.
