dexadrine crash?

Posted by maggie1970 on February 26, 2005, at 11:02:12

I just began taking dexadrine yesterday. This is after taking provigil and having difficulty breathing. Anyway, it was a Godsend. The first time I felt like getting out of bed, even left the house! To anyone who knows how bad it is to be that depressed, to find something that changes your mood enough to want to leave the house, I could have cried if I didn't feel so much better. But then there was this sort of crashing at the end. Is that normal? I felt really weird emotionally, so I took some klonopin, and felt a little better eventually. I also get a little racy heart, which I can deal with if for this time it gets me through this rough time (not something I want to take for a long time, because of the heart, and don't want to rely on it). But I had not left the house all week. I took it this morning, a little less, feel a little less euphoric, but still "chipper" and ready to face the day. Does anyone know about the mood crash? Also, do the side effects (headache and nausea) go away, or am I going to be dealing with that too? i can deal with it as long as I feel okay enough to move from my bed! Thanks to any suggestions!

Can I ask what you're taking the dexadrine for? Also, what other stimulant(s) have you tried, if any--and was it for the same problem?
As far as stims go, I have tried Ritalin but have been on Adderall for about 2 years for ADHD.

L.B.:
For lethargy, lack of motivation. The doc wrote for depression on the label, though he also considered it for attention deficit. He at first used Provigil, but I had a bad reaction to it, and it made me short of breath, and really irritable. So this one, other than the crash and headache, has been wonderful. I decided, on my own, to cut my dose in 1/4 (it's the weekend, and he's away, so i can't ask him, but somehow I doubt he'd mind me going down). I am taking one half of a tablet, not two tablets. The crash is nearly non-existant, so maybe I can build to a little more in a few. The headache and nausea I think will go away in time. I was just worried about the mood crash, but cutting it seems better, and using clonazepam seems to do a lot for the anxiety. If not, I can't take the mood crash, and will need to give this one a miss :( The mood crash was awful. Felt like an incredibly anxious hopelessness.

You might want to consider the extended release version of dexedrine. Or adderrall (which also has an extended release version).

The dexadrine crash is awful. I hate it. If you can time how long it takes before you crash you can take your next dosage before that time. For instance I crash just before the 3 hour mark so I have been trying to take another dosage before I reach 3 hours. I am lucky that it does not make me nauseous or give me a headache. Although one day I took too much and had to use clonazapam to bring me down. But I do crash hard at night because I have to stop taking it or else I won't sleep (obviously)

Sigh.

Maxime,
My doctor called back and left a message that although it's unusual, it's not unheard of to have this reaction. Argh! I also feel that way after 3 hours. I don't know if there's anything else like dexedrine that maybe I can ask him about, if anyone knows? I already tried provigil, but had a reaction to that. I think they are different. I'm feeling frustrated. Maybe the chemistry of dexedrine didn't work for me, but something similar would. Would Ritalin be similar? Or adderal? Could look into straterra, but don't know how that works. Anyway, thanks for all your comments/

Hi

I was on Aderall XR until it was pulled in Canada (Feb 11th) Anyhow it was the best med for me because I did not crash and it keep me "up" during the day. It did lose some of it effect after a few months of taking it but I never went above the 30 mg since I was taking Parnate and the two are contraindicated.Luckily I have a doctor who knows that if something doesn't feel right I will stop taking it. And I had brought in some journal articles that shows stimulants could be used with MAOIs.

Try the Adderall Xr if you can.
