No longer on SSRI and now having anxiety

Posted by ST on February 14, 2005, at 10:07:40

Hi,
I started posting in 2001 and haven't been here in a while.
In May, I went off Serzone and am now just on Wellbutrin (used to be on Wellburtin/Serzone/Depakote). I'm a diagnosed bp II, but with my pdoc's guidance, I am off any mood stabilizer. So far, absolutely no hypo mania or mania, but a bit of anxiety has surfaced, due to not being on an SSRI anymore, I believe.
I now wake up at night and cannot go back to sleep...I lie awake and worry, I think about all the stuff on my to do list, I get mad at myself for being up...I eventually end up falling asleep but am exhausted all day. I'm worried the lack of sleep could trigger mania...
Wondering if I should go back to being on an SSRI with the Wellbutrin to help with this.
Any recs for sleeping aids that won't make me groggy the next day? I've tried Calm's Forte, Valerian....Tylenol PM.
Thanks!

Some people here mention that Wellbutrin can increase anxiety. Maybe something like a very low dose of Seroquel...this is an atypical antipsychotic that is sometimes used for anxiety at low doses(and Bipolar). If you haven't visited the site remedyfind.com, you can view people's experiences, what has helped....
But other people here may be better qualified in commenting on this....

Hi:
I was once,... like you 'Serzone and Wellbutrin' combo. which lasted until the first part of last year. My pdoc. replaced the Trazodone for 'safety'/liver issue reason. In the beginning on the Trazodone, however, I had quite 'drowsy' feelings lasted even next day although I instantly felt 'this med. meant for me.' I lowered its dosage from 100 mg. to 50 mg. but even on this 'little' dosage, I was fairly in good mood without any 'dropy' feelings. Now, I've been on 150 mg. - 225 mg. according mood.

In my suggestion, ask your pdoc. some 'calming' effect med. like the one I mentioned above, because WB is one of 'fantastic meds.,' however a prominent and notorious S.E.s is said to be bring up 'Anxiety,' if WB alone.
H.G.

Hey, I'm in the same boat! I can't seem to ditch SSRI for anxiety resurfacing. Also, low-dose sedative SSRI's tend to help my sleep (a little not a lot). I'm thinking about asking my pdoc for 250mg of Keppra at bedtime (just for sleep). When I took it before it worked really well for the middle of the night wakening you talk about (and which I also have). Neurontin also worked well at bedtime (just for sleep). The Keppra didn't make me feel "foggy" the next day, just a little clumsy and unbalanced for a few hours.

Ritch, what else are you taking and what is your diagnosis?

Thanks, S

Hey Ritch,

I know what you mean. My most recent "annual" discontinuation of an ssri ( prozac in this case) after a few days of minor chills, sweating, agitation etc..I thought I was in the clear but after a few weeks I noticed my thoughts drifting to insignificant crap I don't pay attention to when I am on an ssri. Also after around 4 to 5 weeks I felt here we go again. Anxiety crept back and I found too much of my energy going into talking myself out of my anxiety. The resumption of Prozac led to remission of these sympoms. JN

I do know that some doctors add Lexapro with Wellbutrin and that works well. My daughter is on Wellbutrin and her doctor talked about adding an SSRI to it for anxiety.....but ended up adding adderall instead. She is having trouble with concentration and her anxiety may be caused by that. You should consult with your doctor, because there are many different medication that work well together. -L

Currently 250-375mg Depakote, .5-1.0mg clonazepam, 1/2 mg Celexa every other day, plus fishoil and folic acid a little L-tyrosine.

I looved Celexa - I found it to work so well for me. However, I gained 30 pounds in about three months on it!
