Is there anything that will help treat akathasia?
I'm beginning to think that's what I'm feeling- I have every described symptom of it.

well, the BEST thing you can do is try a reduced dose or completely stop the offending medicine. But, lacking that...Inderal (propranolol) is used in low to moderate doses for akathasia. Benzos are also used, only or in conjunction with propranolol...the big ones for this purpose seem to be Klonopin and Ativan. Anti-Parkinson's drugs such as Mirapex or Cogentin can also be used.

Hi:
I truly understand your frustration and fear you're going through, as having read and replied to your posts for the past several days, here, on this board.However, med. after med., ... just make you confused and giving your 'unending' worry.
In my suggestion, ... just wait 'tomorrow,' and get appropriate advice along with proper dx from the 'legitimate' source, your pdoc.
If you feel SO overwhelming to speak out your mental problems in detail, then try to write down your symptoms as detail as possible. Probably, the best explanation is all of your posts you wrote here on this board, above. Print them out and take with you, because it's sometimes very hard to explain all of your mental problems verbally, particularly your are currently 'without' meds. Writing/typing your problems are a 'great' source for your pdoc. to dx. appropriately.
Hopefully, your appt. with your pdoc. is 'productive' one, tomorrow!

The first treatment I had was 50mg IV in the ER for that, the pills were follow up for several days to stop the reaction. If I get to wigging out from anxiety that "feels" like akathisia I'll take Benadryl with my clonazepam and it works like a charm.

Propranolol has usually stopped it for me, oh, around 40-50mg, but that would vary by one's body, heart, etc... I'd start more conservatively around 10-20 per dose and add more, it does, of course, like all beta-blockers, lower the pulseAlternatively I've used an older anticholinergic ("anti-parkinsonian") medication called Akineton (biperiden).. but with that stick with the lowest dose, anticholinergics can make one feel a bit loopy (they're somewhat related to their original source, belladona and can exhibit atropine toxicity in the body if taken too much). 1mg of Akineton give or take has worked too. There's also the old standard Cogentin (benztropine), though its a bit more dulling than Akineton.
Hope that helps, akathisia, esp. acute isn't a great state to be in:/ If its really acute, probably a dose reduction of the offending medication (I'm assuming a neuroleptic, although SSRIs and related drugs can cause a somewhat similar condition at a higher dose).

I was given Cogentin...the nurse said I looked a lot better, but I felt pretty much the same. On a separate occasion my psychiatrist prescribed Akineton, which wasn't very helpful either. I eventually gave up on the atypicals.
