If you take an antipsychotic(blocker of dopamine) and a stimulant(releaser of dopamine), will that keep the stimulant from helping with depression? I know it obviously seems like they contradict themselves and will keep me from getting a good effect, and possibly make me feel worse since it seems I need less dopamine. But I was hoping the antipsychotic maybe worked on a different part of the brain than the stimulant so that the stimulant could still help. Anyone know about this?

anytime I tried taking one of the atypical antipsychotics (zyprexa, seroquel) with amphetamine, it just simply dampened the effect of amphetamine.

yeah, i agree with bart. antipsychotics and other D2 antagonists inhibit the mechanism of amphetamines, especially the appetite suppressing part. as for the other way around, i haven't found any real literature documenting that.

i used to take 15mgs abilify with my adderall, until I dropped the abilify. Basically, it reduces the effect of the stimulant in question, but the combo is still used sometimes. As for your brain "needing less dopamine," there's no research to support the "dopamine hypothesis," which holds that people with certain mental illnesses have more dopamine or are hyper-sensitive to it. It is true that all antipsychotics dampen dopamine (SIGNIFICANTLY...think 70-90%), but it is NOT supported by any research that this "corrects a chemical imbalance". Just thought I'd post that.
