Hey guys,
I noticed that my skin was great when I was on Seroquel and remember thinking that was unusual.
Now I'm cutting down to start a new drug, I have had this sudden flare up! My skin is really bad, worse than its been in ages! Also, I have lots of spots over my chest, stomach and legs. Very strange. It is definately acne, not a rash. I have NEVER had this before. I've only ever gotten a few spots and they have always been on my face.
Hmmm. Anyone else noticed anything like this?

hey prettypaints,
i've never heard of seroquel, or i guess any psych drug for that matter, helping with acne. i know that lithium and probably some of the others made my skin a mess. i waited after discontinuing for it to clear up, but i eventually had to see a dermatologist to get topical treatments and oral antibiotics, which helped within a few weeks. you might consider that if your acne is really bad and disturbing.
my guess would be that the antipsychotics and other meds might cause more skin problems than solve by messing with your hormones. risperdal, for example, can cause abnormal lactation of something, and depakote is implicated in causing polycystic ovary sydrome in young women. oral contraceptives are used at least to treat PCOS, and they're also used for acne. i would think that they work by suppressing levels of male hormones and increasing estrogen and progestin. i don't really know, though. if you find out, please let me know.

The dopamine antagonist properties of Seroquel were most likely helping your acne. Generally drugs that reduce dopamine also reduce testosterone which is a large contributor towards acne.
Prodopaminergic drugs on the other hand tend to exacerbate acne due to their indirect testosterone elevating effects. Drugs like amphetamine, Wellbutrin, Parnate, and Amineptine are known to cause this problem.
Of course, there are other mechanisms implicated with acne other than testosterone, but it's a strong indicator none the less.
I tend to notice my mood, libido, and acne are all related. They all seem to go together. This isn't indicative of others though. Everyone's has a unique chemistry.
