Hello, I lost my job yesterday, hence eventually I will be without any type of insurance. I take Paxil and Trileptal. The Paxil I can afford, I'll jsut have to eat the costs on it... the Trileptal on the other hand, there is no way I can afford it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do about this? I'm desperate...

Let me do some research on this.
You will get COBRA thru work. Can you afford that? I am in Human Resources and don't deal with this directly but can maybe find out something. Don't despair. Are you looking for a new job?

You can switch from Trileptal to carbamazepine (generic Tegretol). It's one of the cheapest meds you can buy. The downside is you need to have blood tests now and then.

Drug companies give free drugs if one's income is low enough. Your doctor must submit the form to the drug company. Ask your doc to do that.

If you end up paying out of pocket, you can shop around for lowest price meds on the internet. Stay with the legitimate U.S. or Canadian pharmacies that require doctor's Rx. You can also shop around for labwork. Best thing is to keep buying your same insurance through COBRA if possible. If I remember correctly you have 60 days after termination to decide.

Go to the website of the company making the drug. You can usually find out about whatever special programs they have for those who can't afford the medication. They will usually have forms you can download and fill out to apply for the programs.

Your doc may be able to get you samples. I've had to do that before.

Thanks everyone for all your info! I called the PDOC yesterday and they're moving me to tegeretol, which is ok I guess. I'll have to do bloodwork to make sure my white cell count is ok , but that's ok. I might get insurance through the county. We shall see. Thanks everyone for helping, you guys have all been very supportive. I'll keep ypu posted.
