So thirsty all the time - is it the meds?

Posted by jerrympls on January 5, 2005, at 19:06:28

Maybe it's the meds - maybe it's the dry weather or a combination - but I am thirsty much of the time. Although water usually quenches the thirst - I have a "craving" for sweeter drinks like Coke or Pepsi (caffeine free of course). I'm also worried about the risk of diabetes because I've been on Seroquel for over a year now.

I'm on Lexapro, klonopin, seroquel & dexedrine. I've heard of carb craving from meds - but excessive thirst cravings? Just typing this post is making me parched!

Thanks
jerry

If you've been experiencing excessive thirst for a while, it would be wise to get checked for diabetes. If it's only a few days, you might want to wait a bit and see if the situation continues. Since it's winter and the heat is on likely on a lot (particularly if you're in Minnesota as your name suggests), that definitely could be a factor, especially if you have a radiator. Try using a humidifier and see if that reduces your thirst. Good luck.

It might be the meds. When I was taking Effexor, I had the same excessive thirst. That med really dried out my whole system. Sinus' dried up completely, my skin became dry and itchy, and I drank a lot of water. When I stopped taking that med (after 3 weeks), everything went back to normal.

I recommend talking to your doctor about this, and any other side effects you are experiencing. It might just be a temporary side effect, or it might be due to something else entirely. Best to ask.

Could be the meds. When I was taking Seroquel it gave me very severe nightime agitation. I would wake up in the morning shivering because I all my clothes and bedsheets were drenched in sweat. This had two major effects : making me drop a pound a week and making me thirsty non-stop, most likely to make up for what I lost at night. The thirst was also worse in the morning ... I also made tons of thirst-based nightmares. It went away when I stopped taking Seroquel because it made me too drowsy during the day.

i don't know about your meds in particular, but i've definitely had meds make me thirsty. lithium at high doses (1800mgs) made me ridiculously thirsty all the time. i took it this summer, and i craved sweet drinks like you more than water-- i had a huge jamba juice smoothie at least once a day, plus more juice and sometimes soda. had i been on the dose longer, i probably would have gained weight from all the sugar, but in the long run, i didn't have any lasting effects from the thirst and drinking so much. oh, but i did have the problem of polyuria-- having to pee all the time, probably b/c of drinking so much. good luck.
