No, they are not the same! Trileptal is Tegretol with an oxygen atom added to it. Lamictal has its own chemical make up. Lamictal can help unipolar depression ... trileptal cannot.

Why did you think they were the same?

Trileptal can also help with impulse control problems; it is being used frequently for Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar II Disorder.

So, If you are Rx'd Trileptal, that means you are BPII or Borderline? How high does the dose need to be? I was Rx'd l50mg of Trileptal with an AD and Benzos by a pdoc before he left his practice. That means my depression/anxiety is really the above and nobody told me? Current pdoc Discontinued it. I'm confused. New doc had old doc's records. Rx Drug Book says Lamictal is used in rapid cycling bipolar disorder and well as for seizures. Phillipa

Just researched Trileptal on the Web. It states it has been in Europe for l0 years. It does not have the side effects of the other mood stabalizers, but also does not deliver the "punch". Should be used in pts that don't require a rapid stabalization of mood and may have other problems such as sleep related, etc. Phillipa

It doesn't necessarily mean that you are either. I've known of people who were given Trileptal as an adjunct treatment for unipolar depression, when their antidepressant needed a little boost.

150 mgs is nothing. You probably wouldn't have experienced anything but placebo at that dose. Typically, doses of 900 mgs to 2400 mgs are required for mood disorders/personality disorders.

It is a first-line treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, that much I know, and has been a lifesaver for me.

Thanks, You made me feel better. He had said it was a "baby dose", and that maybe it would help me feel better. I think he was trying to get the Paxil to work again. Phillipa

I was asked why I have never been given Trileptal, and I am (at least currently) diagnosed with unipolar depression and GAD.
These days, being prescribed a med doesn't mean you have the disorder it is commonly prescribed for.
I am on Lamictal, and it was prescribed to help --well, stabilize my mood, which the antidepressant didnt seem to do in the big picture. It has so far helped so much I am very encouraged. And I am not at a very high dose.
