Nortriptyline?

Posted by tensor on December 28, 2004, at 14:25:10

Hi all,

I would like to hear your experiences of nortriptyline. I wonder if i should replace my no-longer working combo of remeron+zoloft with a TCA, like nortrip and then use lithium as an augmentor. Nortrip is a 5ht2a antagonist as the remeron and should have a mild sexual s/e profile, but i don't know about other s/e or how effective it is an AD. Maybe you can share your experiences and ideas..

HI

I was on Nortriptyline - up to 200 mg ( I think?). First the bad stuff: side effects while starting the med for me included akathasia (a feeling of internal restlessness) which eventually went away but I had to go on Ativan for a while because of it. Other side effects that continued were increased sweating and shakey hands.

Now the good stuff: it helped pretty well with my stubborn depression. Compared to most other antidepressants I've been on, this one helped most with motivation and lethargy. I also had NO sexual side effects at all. Another good thing is that they ccan do blood tests to find the therapeutic window.

My doc also had me on Dexedrine to help augment it since my main symptoms were/are apathy, lethargy, fatigue, low motivation, etc.

Why am I off it? The shakey hands hindered my music playing (I play cello) and it got so bad people at work would notice my hands shaking. But now that I think of it - it really helped with social isolation too.

Hope this helps.
Jerry

I think this is a very good idea. Taking a TCA would replace much of the action of zoloft + remeron in one pill. Plus, lithium augmentation of TCA's is more documented than with SSRI's.

Nortryptaline has been used extensivly with lithium, but it may not be as good on anxiety as a more mixed TCA. I would recomend clomipramine (2a blocade), or perhaps amitryptaline (2a blockade)

Just a suggestion.

But might clomipramine and amytriptiline have more potential for sexual SE than nortryp?

I think nortrypaline is prosexual, amitryptaline is fairly neutral, and clomipramine is could be antisexual.

Sounds good, it's the blood test needed? Not that i'm afraid of it, but i'm just wondering.

Sorry to hear that :-(

Kind regards,
Mattias

Hi link!

Yes, i think so too. My own doctor has a vacation until the 10th.. aargh! So i'll have to sit and wait and do nothing. I did talk to another doctor but she wouldn't change my medication..

I can imagine that nortrip could be bad for anxiety. Clomipramine gave me severe sexual s/e. Amitrip seems to be somewhere between those two, maybe the best choice.

Kind regards,
Mattias

I don't think the blood test is needed - but it can be a useful tool when trying to find the optimal dosage.
