my mom sent me a box of florida oranges, grapefruits, and a lime, and i'm wondering what i have to worry about since the bottle says to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking it.
any help is appreciated!

Hi,
never heard of. You shouldn't drink alcohol either while taking benzos, but i have no problem taking a glass of wine or two.

On the Drug Fact Sheet (quite lengthy) I got when I had my prescription re-filled, it too says to avoid eating or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Xanax. It goes on to say that grapefruit juice can increase the amount of certain medications in the bloodstream. It doesn't appear to be prohibited, but I suppose you just need to be careful to ensure you don't end up over-sedated. I think the orange juice should be ok. I drink a lot of oj and take 2,000 mg - 3,000 mg of vitamin C, and I have never had a problem taking any medication, including Xanax.

If that enzyme is inhibited while you have alprazolam in your system, it will remain more active than it otherwise would have. That is to say, its half-life will be extended. If you take the grapefruit before the alprazolam, you will have an additional effect, as 3A4 also exists in the intestinal wall. You will have an effect as if you took more alprazolam than you actually did, and, you will have the prolonged effect due to the extended half-life.
The grapefruit effect might last as long as 24 hours, or as little as six hours, depending both on dose and your own genetic makeup.

Diazepam is a little bit different than alprazolam. There are four different metabolic routes for diazepam. Four different enzymes, and only of them blocked by grapefruit juice. The metabolites of diazepam have some activity, too, so it's pretty hard to say just what the outcome would be. But, yes, in general, the effect of the diazepam would be intensified and lengthened. To what extent is not easily predicted. The difference might be too small to notice.
