effective meds for bipolar II depression

Posted by rainy on November 5, 2004, at 16:54:03

Help. right now I'm on 300 mgs of topamax, 200 deseyrl, and .5 mg klonopin as necessary which is about every durn day. I've been on provigil for two weeks and am now at 200 and seem to be in some sort of obsessive mode. I'm going to cut back, I think.
I'm a little crabby, sleeping OK, really bummed by (expected) election results, but otherwise not under unusual life stress. I'm flat out depressed but functioning at a high level--most people wouldn't know that I'm depressed just to be around me for an hour or so.
I've been having fleeting, black bird sort of suicidal ideation since beginning the provigil that I won't act on, which has given me extra energy, and I've got a mild--moderate case of the topamax stupids.
I make myself keep going. I don't want to gain weight--I'm leery of the SSRI's most of which haven't worked for me. Wellbutrin pooped out on me and serzone is off the market.
What does anybody know about dopamine levels and bipolar disorder? Anybody on cymbalta ?

I'm on a little Cymbalta right now (only AD). Low side effects, but I must say that Effexor worked a lot better. I suspect it has to do with the mild dopamine reuptake inhibition it has. A combo that worked really well in the past was Effexor+Adderall. Celexa+dexedrine worked well, too. I just wish I could tolerate the stuff.

what about weight gain with effexor? I've read that's a big adverse effect. And what couldn't you tolerate about the other stuff? Sorry--I've already forgotten what it was and this is an immediate response. Sheesh.

dexedrine?

Dexedrine like the OTC stuff you buy if you're a teenager and want to suppress your appetite or if you're needing to stay awake? Tell me about Adderall. (sp)
and excuse me, are you taking a mood stabilizer besides the AD?
gotta go buy a dog house, really, but I'm very interested in your response.

You can add a little Wellbutrin or a stimulant or even Stratterra to the Effexor to counter the increased appetite from it (it worked well for me).

My bipolar depressions have been remarkably erased only by stimulants (thus far), but stims tend to make me too anxious. My mood cycling also is reduced and my mood is more steady-state, but it is unforunately just a chronic, moderately anxious state. I also slept much better (more soundly) when I was on stims (dexedrine-dextroamphetamine, Adderall, or Ritalin). Adderall is mixed amphetamine salts used for ADHD and narcolepsy, etc.

I'm taking Depakote, clonazepam, and a little Cymbalta currently. My depression has been starting to kickin again the last couple of weeks. Starting to get the usual increased appetite, sleep disruption, somnolence, and thick-headedness. I've got some WB or Stratterra that I need to start adding soon, but am hesitating because they can make me hostile. Anyhow, if you can tolerate it ... I really found the Effexor+Adderall or Celexa+dexedrine combo to work really well in the past.
