Does NEURONTIN really help with anxiety?????

Posted by Robz on October 27, 2004, at 13:11:49

Does anyone have any scientific evidence proving that Neurontin does help with anxiety? I have been on it for a couple months now and I am really not sure if I am making myself feel the way I do or if it is the Neurontin. I feel great most of the time but I am still having some pretty bad anxiety at times.
I have done some research and there is no scientific evidence proving that this med helps people with Bipolar disorder. It is actually a proven fact that is does not help the disorder. I think that these are similar and if it does not help Bipolar then why would it help Anxiety.
Honestly I think it is all in my head and I think the pill is working so I am feeling better. Then When I do have anxiety its like well the pill is obviously not working and I need to cope with this..... Any info would be great!

Also I want to just quit this stuff cold turkey....Anyone tried that????
Let me know..... Robyn

I haven't found that it helps my anxiety. It helps me sleep, though.

It helped me w/ anxiety--specifically worries. At least it did for quite some time. My pdoc says that this is actually a little unusual. It is typically more helpful w/ the more physical aspects of anxiety rather than the mental ones. As far as I know there is not a ton of literature on it. People just try it b/c it doesn't interact w/ a lot of other meds and has low side effects. Don't know if this post is helpful or not...hope so.

My understanding is that it helps some people with anxiety but not all people. The first time I took Neurontin, Xanax was pooping out on me big time after years of taking it and I was having to increase my Xanax dose to get relief from the constant worry, anxiety, tenseness, nervousness - whatever you call it. Since I had never tried Neurontin before and was highly skeptical of taking it, I broke open a 300 mg. capsule and put some of the white powder in a liquid and drank it. Not too long after I noticed that my anxiety was gone. So, that's all the scientific proof I need. I have found that it doesn't work as well for me at higher doses as it does at lower ones. Occasionally, it doesn't work at all, but then if I skip a dose or two, it works better the next time I take it.

Just yesterday, I decided I'd give Neurontin a try again to help me sleep, since I've been experiencing some anxiety over the past 3 days and was anticipating a bad night of insomnia. On 3 previous occasions I had tried this med but only at a 300 mg. dose. Last night I goofed and took 600 mg. I had a great night sleep but woke up blasted with drowsiness and slight dizziness. And I was still anxious in the morning; the neurontin had had no effect on it. So I took .5 mg Xanax and that surely helped. That's should say something about my one-time experiment. At bottom, I've found Neurontin to be great for insomnia (as a consequence of its side effects) and for certain kinds of pain.

For me it works very, very well.
