I am wondering if I should switch to Wellbutrin or simply add it to my effexor...I love effexor's effects except for the sexual ones, which is why my GP suggested the switch. But the Effexor has really helped my anxiety, irritability, and moodiness....will Wellbutrin help these too? It seems to be mostly for depression-I think I am more anxious than depressed, although I did have a lot of crying spells.
Any ideas? I have samples of 150mg Wellbutrin XL. I currently take 75mg of Effexor XL, but I think 37.5mg would do the trick for me. Can I just take a Wellbutrin on top of the Effexor and see if my sex drive comes back...Do I need to space them out during the day?

Effexor hits lots of your brain...good for some, bad for others. Anyway, I think adding Wellbutrin is unnecessy right now...you're anxious, and wellbutrin isn't for those of us with anxiey. Sooooo, I'd say up the Effexor. 75mgs is nothing compared to what a lot of people take. See how it works out; if you're displeased, start talking combos with your doc.

I am pleased so far with the effects of Effexor, except that it has wrecked my sex drive. Sex just doesn't do anything for me! I want to give it another few weeks and see if it gets better, but that's the reason my doc suggested switching. She didn't seem to think it would go away. However, she didn't prescribe the Effexor, so I don't know how knowledgeable she is about the anxiety v. depression issue...

I added Wellbutrin to my Effexor because my depression was lingering but I couldn't tolerate a dose higher than 150mg of the XR without my blood pressure going dangerously high. The WB helped a lot, rebooted my sex drive (hehe, I just thought of that one), but it did not help my anxiety. I can't say it made it worse, but it made me jumpy or antsy. I'm on 300mg of Wellbutrin XL.
good luck.

>one more question...do you take both of them at the same time? I currently take my Effexor XL in the morning and want to try the Wellbutrin XL at the same time...

Yup, I take them not long after I wake up. The Wellbutrin has prevented me from being able to sleep, so I do take 10mg of Ambien, and for alcohol cravings I have just started Topamax at 25mg, have not ramped up yet. For my panic attacks I take .5mg xanax twice a day. I have been dx'd with BipolarII, GAD, and panic attacks.
BTW I did not remember any of my dreams for the first 5 months months while on these ADs. Now they are back, are very strange, but not frightening.

thanks. I think i might try adding the Wellbutrin for a few days if my doc says ok (I hate having to leave messages and wait for a nurse to call me back...it is so inefficient!) I don't want to quit effexor and then find out that wellbutrin doesn't work anyway, because I don't think I can go through the withdrawal twice judging from all I have read about it.
I have been sleeping so well since i've been on effexor. I think before I was too anxious or something. I have been having pretty "realistic" dreams as well.
good luck with your new meds!
