I was under the impression that most anticonvulsants were neuroprotective !!

However this article is related almost exclusively to the development of the brain during the pregnancy.
"[...] Because depression of synaptic neurotransmission is the common denominator in the action of AEDs, we investigated whether common AEDs may cause apoptotic neurodegeneration in the developing brain and what the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms are. [...]"They seem to be a pure poison for the offspring. But what about us, adults? Are we safe? Where did i miss something?
Although Lithium is not an AED, it is clearly the most trusted neuroprotective and neurogenesis promoter.

"Cheney stated:< When a CFIDS patient who is still experiencing the underlying mechanisms of brain injury goes off Klonopin, there is a burst of excess neural firing and cell death>. [...]."
Cell death! It is another reason to be afraid of the withdrawal.

Sorry you'll have to explain. I'm not sure what AED refers to (antiepileptic medication ?)

>Well it appears that both clonazepam and magnesium are very good neuro-protective agents.
On the other hand, anxiety, prolonged stress are brain's cells killers. Therefore it is a very good thing to take the medication. We should avoid at all cost to get off it too quickly as it seems to cause excess neural firing and cell death.
That brings me a second question. Do we get the same kind of neuronal damage when we quit an SSRI?
This is the end of the thread.
