I have just started wellbutrin for depression and am concerned about a couple things. First of all I am concerned about side effects like weight gain and sexual side-effects. I can read all the studies numbers but really how prevelent are these side effects? My other big question is that I also have insomnia that I take valerian root for. Can I continue to take valerian root without concern of drug interaction?

Of all the antidepressants, wellbutrin probably has the lowest incidence of sexual dysfunction. As well, weight gain with wellbutrin is much less common than with other ad's like the SSRI's.
The side effects that are more common with wellbutrin are insomnia, and perhaps some anxiety.
I know of no interaction between valerian and wellbutrin, although it might be prudent to speak to a pharmacist first.

Hi:
I, too have a problem in terms of 'insomnia' and 'irritability' on Wellbutrin SR. For this, I've been on Trazodone, somewhere around 75 mg. helps me sleep well. Also, Traz. is primarily for depression, but works well for Anxiety, if you have. One MAJOR problem on Traz. is 'sedation,' then I can not take more than 100 mg., although my pdoc. initially rxed 150 mg. at the beginning of Traz. and gradually increase 300 mg. However, I never think I can accomplish that 'high dosage' level due to my tendency on sleepiness. I know the herb, Valerian, however you may need to take this with precaution. Because, there may have some interaction between those two. My pdoc. never allows me take any 'herbal remedy' with any psycho.-meds.

I completely agree with linkadge's response below. A pharmacist is a great resource for this type of question. I personally have never heard of any interaction between Valerian and Wellbutrin.

thank you everyone. I have asked around and did some research...I also work in a clinic and there isn't an interaction...just to be used with cation because it can cause excessive sleepyness I guess.
