You sound like you live in the UK.
Anyway, you may want to try quantifying your problem into a measurable number.
In other words, saying "my heart does somersaults" is like a plane flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet in the air. "Or its like saying my computer shuts off once a week , fix it".
Get this problem down to 10,000 feet.
Meaning, check your heart rate when you rest, are excited and normal.
next calculate your maximum heart rate.
Heres how:
217- (0.85 * age)This number is what your heart will do when you need oxygen to your body.
The next time your heart races. Check your pulse.
Assess if it's constant or varying all over the place. Take it every few minutes. If it races up to your max heart rate it's nothing more then a panic attack. You heart is designed to pump at that rate for short periods of time.
You then let your doc in on this information.
Your doctor will then take this info from 10,000 feet down to ground zero.
you follow me?

CCThis is exactly what mine does.
Check what you eat drink..coffee alchohol, citris fruit-especially oranges..
A nasal spray for hayfever set mine off again.Tell your doc how you described it as in your post.
Anxiety makes you more aware of it.
I have one about every 4-10 minutes.
I'm not dead ( questionable) yet and I've had it for well over 10 years.
Effexor either stopped it or made me less aware of it.
Plse don't worry but hassel your gp.

hi crazychickuk,
there are a bunch of people who have something called PVC's - harmless heart palpitations. I have them, so do some others posters who stick mostly to the Social Board and main babble board. You might want to try getting some advice from Mrs. C (a very cool poster!) or Captain. I would direct you to some of the posts but I don't know how to do it...sorry!The PVC's are scary and weird, but not life-threatening. There are other kinds of heart palpitations that are also not life-threatening.
Please don't worry too much about this. Get the holter test and see what the doc says...chances are that you have a harmless condition like many others.
Good luck!
How are you feeling lately? Is your mum back yet? Less stress with your child, hopefully?take care!

I get that heart somersault thing too. It happens often when I sitting, not stressed, and all of a sudden it flips and feels like it's going to jump out of my chest. It's very startling, but I've had it checked out and the doctor said it's anxiety. You can get anxiety attacks even when you're not feeling stressed. Heart palpatations are caused by stimulants like sugar, caffeine, alcohol and stress, and are not usually a symptom of serious heart disease. I completely stay off of caffeine, and my heart doesn't do it as often. Effexor has also helped me. I get chest pain too, but it's always localized to one specific area. It's muscle pain, because I can feel myself tense up. My doctor told me if you could pin point exactly where the chest pain is, it's muscle. If you have chest pain from heart disease, you can't pin point it, it's just pain all over your chest. Also, when you're anxious and depressed, you tend to hunch over alot, which can cause your chest and back muscles to weaken and tense up, which can cause pain. Muscles around the ribs are very tender, and if these are inflamed the pain is very sharp. If you're anxious about chest pain too, it will increase. I would be concerned if you had sudden pain in your jaw or back that you don't normally get, that could be a symptom of heart disease. It's good you're going to your doctor for that test to rule anything out. This has only been my experience.
