A funny story about me and an airplane!!!

Posted by ace on August 20, 2004, at 1:30:55

Guys, i wasn't laughing at the time but this is what happened last year.

I was just getting on the plane for Sydney to tasmania to see my folks for Xmas....well the year before i could do it, just a bit jittery in the plain

but this time....as the plane started going down the run way i was scared as hell! I quickly popped two Xanax but I kne it wan't going to kick in til way after the plane took of...

I was SOOOOooooo scared, panicky.

I rang the air hostess bell about the same time the plane was speeding up....i said stop the plane! i left my medication in the compartment underneath, and I could burst a valve in my brain (of course this was a lie, I was just scared and embarresed to tell the hostesses i was panicking)

They quickly ran to the cockpit and the plane stopped and turned back- just for me!!!!

man i felt embarrased

the pilot refused me oin that plane flight cause he had to be sure everyone was safe....

so there in front of the whole passangers i walked of the plane.

I stopped the plane literally 2 mins before takeoff, and held up the flight 30mins all in all.

This would have cost the airline heaps of $$$$
Whoops!

I eventually caught the next plane (this time sedated to my eyeballs)

Whenever I catch a plane, I will sedate myself to sleep, as i am just so scared...

ASo there you go....Ace is not only capable of being the Nardil Champ, he is also capable of costing an airline company a lot of time and money!!!

Next time, REMEMBER THE XANAX ANDREW!!!!!!

Love you guys!

hello, ace...so it's YOUR fault that rates on Quantas have gone up, is it? well, you're still the nardil champ, so i'll overlook it - this time......be well, chemist

Funnily enough there is no U in Qantas as it's an acronym :) http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?String=exact&Acronym=qantas&Find=Find

Isn't it funny how they jacked up the levy again on prepaid tickets after announcing a record profit. Bet the pricks wouldn't give money back if the oil prices dropped.

As for flying, I would probably need a truck load of Valium to get me back in one again. I like driving, hate being a passenger unable to escape.

Cheers,
Panda.

hey panda.....wouldn't you know, i actually knew the proper spelling of this one, yet my typo got me! i'm with you about flying, although unavoidable many times, and that's when i thank my lucky stars for alprazolam....just as well, the prices do keep going up 'round the world, don't they? and negative correlation with quality....oh well, back to work.....thanks for the heads-up! best, chemist

Good story!
And sooooooooo familiar to those of us with Panic Disorder~

I have flown so infrequently, I always wondered
with all the people who have this disorder, (and many who DISCOVER they have this disorder during a Flight...)

How airlines "handle" a passenger having an acute Panic Attack

Glad to hear in your case that they stopped the Plane...any other interseting stories about this out there, and what the tranqulizer of your choice was?

Well, I think it's worse once you're in the air, in so far as the handling goes.

On one trans-Atlantic flight, about two hours out of Heathrow, I noted the plane made a rather large turn to the right. It was fully fifteen minutes later that we were told we were landing in Iceland, to deplane a passenger who "may have had a heart attack". It was a panic attack. Given how she got to Iceland, I wonder how the poor dear made it home.

Ughhh!!!!!!!!! Just HEARING about someone having a panic attack while in the air..and then COMPOUND the problem by being "de-planed" far away
from your home, made my own heart beat faster! lol

Ill bet the "heart attack" reason given in many
plane landings are really panic- attacks- in -disguise.

I guess without the complication of Agoraphobia
it wouldnt be so bad...once you were on the ground

Funny....how limitd our thinking is.
We "panic" at being in the air inside an airplane
yet, we live our day to day life not really thinking about the fact that the very Earth we are on is a spinning, fast moving, Planet.. moving through the Vacuum of Space, held in place by the Sun's gravitational pull....

Anyone else have these thoughts?

I yam always a thinking, and I ponder thunks (errr... thoughts) like dat.

Context is a huge part of shaping reactions.

When I fly, I humour myself that I am going to a place where they do many different plays (the airport). They put you in a tube, and you sit there for a while. While you're in there, they run fake scenery and stuff outside the "windows", and shake the whole thing now and again for effect. After a certain time, they let you out of the tube, but they've changed the set so that you're now in another act of the play. The longer you're sitting in the tube, the more opportunity they have to change the set, and when they let you out, the more exotic the set has become. They change the clocks, to really mess you up.

From Shakespeare, As You Like It: "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players:"

Works for me. And it's good for some laughs, once in a while.

That IS a funny story! I'm glad you're able to use your sense of humor to find the good part of a potentially scary situation. Hey -- you prob. made the right choice in stopping the plane. If you hadn't, you might end up like that lady stranded in Iceland...that would be much worse! :) (Note: To any Icelandic people, I'm not dissing your coutry...it's just so far from mine...a scary long plane ride back...)

I used to drink heavily when getting on airplanes, then I turned to Ativan. I never made a plane turn back but I have received solicitations from nearby well-wishers.

I remember one guy telling me: "When turbulence hits, honey, just think of it as LITTLE BUBBLES. Little bubbles like in that can of Coke. That's all! Bubbles in the air make turbulence!" I wanted to throttle him and tell him that I'm an engineer and I can explain turbulence better than that. I also wanted to explain that it was not turbulence, but rather the fear of dying a fiery death, that was disturbing me.

Then I realized that in the midst of my irritation and anger, I had somewhat forgotten about my fears! (Note: I'm NOT advocating rage as an antidote to fear!)

Now I'm better at flying. But my deepest sympathies go out to all who are fearful. It's a horrible feeling!

Thats cool! But yeah, I mean, once I went up in the air, I don't know what I would have done, I felt so scared I probably would have jumped out of my chair and ran to the cockpit! I even feel a little scared thinking of it now!

Hmmmm....thanks for that advice....a bit of beer with Xanax might help!!!! ha ha!!

Ha ha!!! You were probably in a better frame of mind to punch him, then describe the technicalities of 'turbulance'!!!!

Thanks man!!! Rumor has it the next flight I get on will be approximately $30 000!

Due to my last error, I cost that much in extra wage, in delaying the whole days schedule!

My Dad couldn't stop laughing, his little old son causing such a financial hickup for a multinational company!

They even had to fill out a special report on the situation!

Oh man, the crazy stuff us guys go through!!!!

Be well Chemist, your mate,

I loved it. I printed it out for a friend of mine. However, if you're going to pretend "as if", it's a simile isn't it?

(to others reading this, the simile comment is an inside joke)

Oh, I don't remember what I said....<going back and looking>....I never used the comparative like or as. It's metaphorical.
