Fatigue with Parnate... does this go away?

Posted by jparsell82` on August 20, 2004, at 16:13:54

I've been on Parnate(30mg/day) for a week now. The past few days I've had terrible fatigue, muscle weakness, completely unsocial... does this pass?? I thought Parnate was supposed to be more activating/stimulating?

hello there, chemist here....i was taking 30 mg/day (divided) parnate for about 1.5 years: i found it to be quick in anxiety relief, and a few weeks (~ 4 or so) before the antidepressant action kicked, full-force. i did not experience the effects you have: perhaps a slower titration is called for, in consult with your doctor? i am assuming no other meds on board - please correct me if i am mistaken - and thus you might be feeling the brunt of parnate's action in full. can you supply any additional information? all the best, chemist

Nope, no other meds. I have Klonopin if I need it but am not taking it right now... I don't need to be any more fatigued. I take 10mg 3x day.

hello there, chemist again....i am baffled. parnate is more or less well-known for being on the stimulating side, and this is from my experience and the anecdotal ones related to this and other MAOIs. there is more than a bit of orthostatic hypotension associated with it: could this be a contributing factor? i am aware of the list of ``common adverse effects'' that does include fatigue and drowsiness. perhaps backing off and reintroducing at a slower rate - and lower dose - could help, as you might be predisposed *personally* to lean towards the more sedating effects. why don't you see who else from the board - i would suggest flagging King Vultan, Sad Panda, zeugma, linkadge, and ace - has some thoughts, as i can only guess that you are a bit sensative to the drug or it is not appropriate for you. i believe SLS and Larry Hoover are also up-to-speed on alternatives. sorry i can not be of more help, other than to point you towards those who are more consistant in answering queries regarding MAOIs......apologies, and i do wish you all the best, chemist

For some people, Parnate disrupts certain circadian rhythms. Not too much is understood regarding this yet. Try using caffeine. Nothing to be afraid of. It will also help with hypotension if you suffer any. Is the fatigue worse around 4:00pm? I found that many of Parnate startup side effects abated over time. I would not discount this possibility with the daytime sedation. The full antidepressant potential for Parnate is not usually realized until dosages of 40-60mg are reached. If the stuff works for you, and the daytime sleepiness persists, try Provigil.

Good luck.

Hi. As a Parnate newbie myself, I thought I'd let you know that I had afternoon sedation for the first 2-3 weeks (on 40 mg), and then it passed. At the end of week six my doc raised the dosage to 60 mg and I had the sedation again for three days. I also had insomnia pretty bad for the first 3-4 weeks. I'd just started getting some control with my sleeping when up went the dosage and I was sleepless once more: but again, this passed in a couple of days and I'm back to being a partial insomniac now. Everyone has a different experience with Parnate, it seems, but the physical side effects of most ADs almost always like to make their presence felt way before any therapeutic value does. It's week seven for me and in the last one or two weeks I've been starting to feel better than I have for years. I hope it goes well for you. (Chemist, SLS, Ace et al have a lot of specific knowledge about Parnate, I just thought I'd offer you my 'newbie' comments for what they're worth.)

Piquet.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've tried drinking Red Bulls and even added in Adrafinil. Still fatigue and muscle weakness. I have no trouble with insomnia. I think I'm going to give up on Parnate as I can't handle this type of side effect category. The dry mouth and initial anxiety I can ride out but the fatigue and weakness is too much. Maybe I my body reacts different to Parnate than most.

Give it 3 weeks if you can.

Easy for me to say.
