Hi All:
I take 100mg of Seroquel each night for sleep and it works well. Seems to work best if I take it about 1 hour before bedtime, but I notice that it gives me nasal congestion. Is this normal? It's not a big deal, but I have to sleep with my mouth open...

Long time no see! :)
I think alpha-1 antagonism causes it. I know you are not supposed to take pseudoephidrine with AD's, but, I have found that not only does Remeron give a blocked nose, it also blocks the decogesting action of pseudoephidrine.

I never respond to posts involving this kind of technical detail, but I will be brave. Does Seroquel act like an antihistamine? I know that some antidepressants act like that. Ever since I have been on Lexapro, my eyes have been a little bit more dry. But it doesn't bother me.
When I take antihistamines, they make my nose dry and it causes nasal congestion. So if I have a runny nose due to allergy, the anti-histamine helps. But if I don't, the anti-histamine causes a stuffed up nose.

Panda's extremely knowledgable... I believe you're right, that it acts like a antihistimine. Different people react differently to meds. I know that for many years I took one 15mg Sudafed each night before bed to keep my sinus clear during the night. For many people, Sudafed and Benedryl cause sleepiness, but for me they make me hyper. Maybe that ADHD thing where some meds have the opposite effect. However, as ong as I've been on Seroquel I've noticed increased congestion, but no post-nasal drip. I've only had one cold since being on it as well, though I don't believe for a minute that the two are related...

Celexa & probably Lexapro have some antihistamine activity & it could cause it. I just assumed that it was from alpha NE blockade because taking psuedoephidrine does nothing to unblock my nose since taking Remeron.
