Klonopin and social drinking

Posted by chess on July 30, 2004, at 21:34:17

I just started Klonopin .5mg three times a day (morning, 3PM, bedtime) and I'm standing up in a wedding next weekend.
Anyone know if it's okay and safe to have one beer or one drink of liquor while on Klonopin?

hello there, chemist here...from a ``will it damage my liver/brain/etc.,'' the answer - if you truly stick to the one-drink - is a resounding no. and this depends on concurrent meds (which you may or may not be taking), hepatic impairment (which you have not specified evidence of or denied), and things including will you have a full meal on board, how many times are you interested in that occassional *one* drink while on klonopin, and so forth...using my subjective definition of ``safe'' in re: other aspects, the answer ranges from ``i wouldn't advise it'' to ``why bother with the booze, take an extra 0.5 mg of klonopin instead and have a club soda.'' this is my opinion. the memory problems will be exacerbated by the booze, but you probably won't be swinging from the chandelier, nor slumping off when it's your turn to toast the newlyweds. however, alcohol and drugs from the class from which klonopin hails do not mix favorably....so there you have my take of it. if you stick to the champagne toast, you'll live to tell about it, sans hangover and obnoxious behaviour. if you have a beer with your pals every month or two, i'd still put you in the safety zone...if you add more booze to the mix, it will be the best wedding you never remembered attending....all the best, chemist

I've done it. you'll get drunk faster and sleepy. I have even drove like that, but that's me and I've done pretty crazy stuff. besides, I live in the Third World.

Everyone is different. Just be careful and, if you feel very drunk, hold it there.

I'm a beer lover and I love to drink at a wedding. With benzos such as Klonopin or Ativan, mixed with alcohol, I totally agree that your memory will be hosed for that night. In fact, you may find it very difficult to have ONLY ONE drink on that night, hey it's a big celebration what could another one hurt, right? One turns into two or five and you will be a total mess. Not pretty. Stick to one only and make sure someone knows what you are up to and keeps and eye on you, and cut you off when you start to jello out (and drive you home).

It's not a combo I would do in public. At home with some fine tunes on the stereo and a couple/three fine german beers is a different story. You won't remember what you did and you won't make a fool of yourself. A much better "setting" if you have to drink while on "klown-a-pin".

Been there done that. Wore out the t-shirt.

Having someone monitoring is a *very* good piece of advice. The benzos and the alcohol may synergize in a way that the person (Chess) may not realize, especially while it is happening. But it would be good to know for the next time.

A person might act crazy, but not smell drunk, and mystify anyone not aware of what is actually happening.

downers + downer

iv drunk on a bunch of klonopin before, then again i couldnt really talk, smoked a blunt and passed-out. also im a opiate addict in recovery, so i dont drink at all. but adding downers to downers is never a good idea. you take your klonopin and have a drink and then your inhibitions dissapear and you start doing things without thinking about them, such as drinking more then you planned. id stick to mabey a smal bowl of MJ. and thats it.
