I know by most accounts this is a no-no. I am thinking about small doses of celexa 5 mg, combined with perhaps 300-600mg of St, John's wort.

Hi, I think my Doctor told me to NEVER take St. John's wart with SSRI's cause of Seratonin Syndrome, which could be fatal. Because I think St. John's wart acts like an MAOI Inhibitor. So PLEASE be careful
Sincerely- Tony C.

The reason I want to know is, that oftentimes I come off of celexa and onto SJW. I feel very good for the first few days, but as the celexa leaves my system I fade.

Combining St. John's wort with SSRI's has been said to cause a "mild" serotonin syndrome (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=11772128 ). Considering that fact and the fact that you're thinking about taking low doses of each, I don't see why any serious problems should be expected. St. John's wort has only very weak MAO inhibitory properties (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10761821&dopt=Abstract and http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12775192&dopt=Abstract ). Its influence on serotonin levels probably involves an indirect effect on the serotonin transporter rather than MAO inhibition. As a result, the danger of combining a low dose of St. John's wort with a low dose of an SSRI isn't nearly as great as the danger of combining a strong MAO inhibitor with an SSRI. There is still some risk involved, so use your own best judgment and exercise caution.

I agree with Shawn. I live in a place, where St. Johns wort is a prescription drug and the prescr. info does not state any contraindication. But if you want to make sure, get the ethanol (or methanol?) extract of Johns wort, because it does not have mao inhibitory properties anymore (thats a standardised extraxt which name I dont remenber...)
