Lexapro--initially worse?

Posted by filmguy on June 16, 2004, at 18:00:55

Hello. I am on day 8 of Lexapro. I noticed this afternoon that I felt awful. Not just the usual exhaustion, but a heightened awareness of the negative thoughts, obsessive worries, and images that led me to meds in the first place. Obviously, it's really early to be feeling better, but is this something anyone else has experienced? Sort of an "it gets a little worse before it gets better" thing?

Hi, it is normal to feel worst before feeling better when starting Lexapro. The first 2-3 weeks can be a rough ride. But hang in there, you will feel better, it just takes time for the med to kick in and the SE's to subside.
Good Luck

WAY worse. I could hardly function for about a week and a half. But after the break-in, I felt great. The jury is still out if Lexapro is the answer for me (I have crashed on it twice now) but I will say this, when it was working, it really worked and I hadn't felt that good in a very long time. I felt "normal" again, like I used to feel before all this hit me.

I know this is hard right now. If you can, stick to it! You might find that things settle down and start working out for you with this med.

Best of luck, and post when you feel a difference, I'd be interested in knowing how you turned out.

I am also noticing that I am irritable, no crying but definitely snapping at my partner and family. I have been on Lex 10mg now for 16 days. I have my fingers crossed that it is going to get better. I feel pretty good otherwise. I take my med before bed, and I sleep pretty much straight through the night without feeling too tired the next day.

I read in one of the above posts that it takes 4-6 weeks to fully kick in. I hope it happens that I notice a real difference as well. When I tried Effexor I felt great pretty much immediately but the SE's didn't ever subside.

Fingers crossed.

Hi folks - I've been on Lex for 9 months. It takes a few weeks to totally adjust. I would say by 7 or 8 weeks most people are sailing along pretty well. Try and take care of yourselves - eat good food, allow yourself enough sleep and drink lots of water (common sense I guess, but it seems to help!). You'll get there, just hang tight!!
