In reply to Serzone to be discontinued - Yahoo news headline, posted by SLS on May 19, 2004, at 17:47:38
Hey Scott, is that world wide news? I did not see that on my Yahoo headlines. Also have you ever taken it? It is one of the few AD's that I actually never took. How are you doing and feeling? I e-mailed you the other day not knowing weather or not you recieved it-I never heard back from you. I hope things are going at least a little better :)

Within a couple of weeks of starting Serzone some years ago, I was hospitalized with some sort of liver thing. It took about a year to get anything like my previous strength back, although that's likely because the doctor continued me on the wretched stuff until I was too sick to keep anything down at all and was literally crawling to the bathroom. Now I worry that it may have caused damage to my liver.
That's only a small part of my reaction to this news, though. A much bigger issue, in my mind, is that it's taken so long for anything like this to happen here. Profits are more important than maybe doing further studies to find out how dangerous it really is? If maybe the liver problems could be predicted in advance? Maybe even ban the drug if it couldn't be proven safe? Maybe take the safety of consumers a little more seriously than the profit margin involved?
Now, I haven't worked in capital B business for a number of years, but I still have the inner accountant inside me. That inner accountant says that it's actually good PR to say, "Wow! We didn't know, but now that there's a strong suspicion, we're going to withdraw this drug voluntarily until its safety to consumers can be proven to our satisfaction." And you know what? I bet it wouldn't even drop the stock prices.
(Yeah, OK, I'm not a BusinessPerson anymore. But I still think that safety is more important than this week's stock price. That's gonna change next week, anyway, right?)
Again, I'm very sorry for anyone who will be affected negatively by this. But I still say, "GOOD! What took them so dang long?"

I was expecting this, but it came a little sooner than I predicting.
I hope that Public Citizen other groups making a lot of noise over Serzone keep quiet enough that the generics aren't forced off the market. They're already making noise about them.
Serzone was great for me in combo with Provigil, and my liver tests came out *better* when I was taking it.
Serzone continues to be a life-saver for a friend after failed trials almost every other AD. She has no side effects at all. As a bonus it normalizes her high blood pressure. She's distraught at the thought that it might be taken off the market.
On a per-user basis, chronic use of cigarettes and alcohol (as widely abused) are much, much, much, riskier than theraputic doses of Serzone.

Hi Snapper.
Serzone is one of the few drugs I have not tried. The only other antidepressants that I haven't tried are Luvox, Ludiomil, and a few tricyclics.
I'm hanging in there. No good news, though. I do not feel hopeless today, but that could change. I don't think I'm in denial that memantine didn't work for me. I'm just not thinking about it too much because I've been purposely keeping myself distracted. I guess somewhere in my brain is the hope that Cymbalta (duloxetine) will soon be approved and that it be "the one".
If you sent me an e-mail, it might have been accidently filtered as spam. Make sure that you place "snapper" in the subject line. I'm sure it will get through.
I hope things are ok with you.
Best wishes,
Scott
