I was wondering whether Effexor combined with alcohol is any different (in reaction) then the ssri's (paxil) etc. combined with alcohol. I used to be on paxil, luvox and i would drink 3-4 beers and it would be just fine (no bad side effects i coud feel). I am going on effexor and i was wondering if that is any different since it affects other neurotransmitters as well?

I think each ssri reacts differently with alcohol but I don't know the medical reason why. I do know that when I was on effexor I had really bad interactions with alcohol. I became tipsy after 2 drinks and often had blackouts. This hasn't been the case on other meds.
It isn't recommended that you drink on ADs but if you do, please be careful.

I had the same experience as Wildflower did. I no longer drink, it scared me so badly. And the hangover was not worth it.

No probs here drinking on effexor, paxil, remeron, or neurontin....effexor actually makes hard liquor loose the "bite" for some reason!? but the alcohol buzz isn't as pleasureable on effexor...peace, or should i say 'cheers'!

i was very carefull for the first two weeks, and apart from being drunker and less alcohol i was o,k. i then went on a few drink binging escapades and was unbelivably sick, and ended up shakey and vomiting for two days.(very unusaul for me,and theres no way the amount i drank would have had that effect on its own) now i don't drink at all. i would say don't bother, but we all do a little trail and error.

Same here...and I think I know why.
The Effexor ( and other anti-depressants) keep us from goig TO HIGH...and to LOW.
They by their nature are "leveling drugs".So no surprise ...I can drink MORE and feel it less...however, it does catch up with you after a couple hours...and then you fall asleep!
