Zoloft 150 mg Severe diarrhea

Posted by zo out on March 22, 2004, at 14:47:55

I have been on Zoloft 150 for 5+ weeks-(previous to this 150 I was on 50 for 1 wk and 100 for a week) and the last 3+ weeks I have had a severe diarrhea with a dose of 150 mg of zoloft.- I have tried Immodium and a diarrhea diet with no help. My psydoc won't change the medication. I feel the Zoloft has helped me about 20% for depression. Previously I was on Celexa 20 for a year and a half and it left me a little manic. Recommendations please-I am losing hope.

Interesting, as usually the diarrhea patients experience on Zoloft is transient and goes away within a short time. This particular SSRI adverse effect is thought to be due to stimulation of serotonin-3 and 4 receptors. Adding Remeron, which blockades serotonin-3 receptors, may provide some relief.

Zoloft is the only SSRI type drug that has caused me diarrhea personally, but it only lasts about one day in my case. I believe the incidence of diarrhea with Zoloft is fairly high among the SSRIs. You could try a different SSRI, such as Prozac or Paxil, or perhaps Effexor, which acts similarly to an SSRI at lower dosages. You could also try a drug from a completely different class, such as Wellbutrin or nortriptyline. I think your doctor needs to be sensitive to the discomfort you are suffering on the Zoloft and its apparent lack of efficacy.

I took Zoloft for two months and had chronic diarrhea/intestinal pain. I lost a lot of weight. I tried Imodium, etc.... and couldn't get it to stop. My doc thought it was my anxiety and depression. But, within two weeks of getting off of Zoloft, the intestine problem stopped. I later was told that intestinal problems are a bit more frequent with Zoloft for some people...
My doc told me people who have sensitivity to SSRI's are often given Ellavil, Trazadone, or those types of meds instead.

They would be 5-HT3 and 5-HT4.

I had the same problem on Zoloft, along with cramping. I did not have this problem with other SSRIs; in fact the opposite [which is worse] with Paxil sometimes [constipation]. I am normal on Prozac. I think diarrhea is fairly common on Zoloft for quite a few people. Regards,
Joy
