Well I have a nervous habit, that I'm not going to share caus it's embarassing, but it's similar to picking at skin or biting nails obsessively. I can't really stop, and I do it constantly, and it relieves some of the anxiety I have.
So I read that there is a medication for this. What is it? And is it bad with side effects? I'm just starting respirdal, and don't want another major drug. Thanks, Mike

Hi Michael,
If the nervous habit is related to anxiety, taking an anti-anxiety medication would probably help. I know that Lexapro is useful for helping obsessive thoughts, so it might help with obsessive behavior like nervous habits. Ask your psychiatrist about it. Also, it's okay to combine Risperdal and Lexapro.

Sorry, I don't know the name for the drug, but I wanted to tell you that you aren't alone. As to a different embarrassing habit, my ex-husband had a habit of *pinching* or *twitching* at himself through his pants pockets. He would wear holes through his underclothes.
He was a very good-looking, and intelligent man. A neat freak and anal-rentative about everything. I guess he was too stressed trying to be perfect.
I don't know if it falls under OCD. If so, maybe Paxil might help?
Lotsof Luck to you.

Inositol has been shown to be effective (at 12 to 16mg per day, i believe) for OC problems such as compulsive habits, as well as trichotillomania, which i don't know if you have or not, but you probably do. As far as psychiatric drugs go, any serotonergic drugs should be (or are supposed to be) helpful: SSRIs, clomipramine, Nardil.
