Hi,
I had a beer the other night and felt good, calm and somewhat uninhibited, I could even type faster.
What does this mean in terms of possible drugs that could be good for the same effect?.
I understand alcohol works on GABA but also on dopamine (which are compromised in social phobia I think). Can this be the reason for the effect I felt?
Maybe the hops also contributed?.
I remember a poster here with the nick: 3 beer effect
I agree the effect is good, but is there any way to obtain the same from a medicine and not alcohol?.
thanks

I read on biopsychiatry.com that they've done studies that prove alprazolam increases dopamine concentrations in the brain, in addition to serotonin. But again, it's a benzodiazepine...so personally I wouldn't recommend it.

I wonder at what doses it increases dopamine. I will check that website

Hi Franz,
Xanax, Lorazepam (Ativan) and Klonopin will all have a similar effect. Benzodiazepines are mild narcotics and you can build up a tolernace to them very quickly. Some people find that they're addictive, and you can go through horrible withdrawl if you take them for an extended period of time and stop taking them suddenly.
Of course, I a Xanax or Lorazepam to help with flying anxiety and it really does the trick. Many people take low doses of Xanax on a daily basis (.25 mgs to 2 mgs) and don't have a problem with it. Maybe it would be a very helpful medication for you to be on, just make sure you're informed about all of the possible risks.
I hope you find something that works.
K.

have you tried slow tapering or replacing with a longer acting benzo like klonopin?
I use klonopin at a low dose, I chose it over xanax because it is said to cause less dependance, but I think xanax is more mood lifting, so I am considering it
thanks and good luck

> thanks and good luckI've used Xanax on and off for going on 2 years...it's only become habitual recently. I've been under an extreme amount of stress, I'm graduating high school in June and still don't know what I'd to like major in or which college I want to go to. Unfortunately, I'm up to 3 mg...I have some Ativan lying around so I might try to substitue that for the Xanax. It doesn't have as long a half-life as Klonopin, but it's not mood-lifting like Xanax.

Very few people declare a major their first year in college, also switching universities/colleges is alright. Just get in, do your best, an enjoy your life...I'm talking from experience... :)

OK i dont agree with all those posts saying benzos are an analogue of alcohol. It's simple: NO benzo can even come close to the : disinhibition,no social-anxiety,pro-sociability, and euphoria on top of that - after alcohol consumption. Alcohol works on many neurotransmitters and receptors - that's why its so hard to create a med working just like alcohol. Benzos work only on Gaba receptors. And they only make anxiety less pronounced (+Xanax for some is euphoric) and that's it.
The worst thing is: alcohol is a toxic drug. Too bad.

> The worst thing is: alcohol is a toxic drug. Too bad.the same for one is not the same for all. Personally, I've never gotten any euphoria from alcohol or benzos; stims are another story. benzo's however, have almost completely eradicated my social anxiety (alcohol could do this too but only for a brief period and at levels where I was slurring my speech and regretting everything the next morning.) ethanol is not a clean drug like benzos so it has many other side effects including toxicity. I don't see why anyone would want to create a drug to replicate the effects of alcohol, benzodiazepines are everything that is good about the drug (gaba potentiation) with out all the other b/s.
