I started a low carb diet, but also eat hardly any fat. I tried omega 3 for depression once, and now read that omega 3 and omega 6 are the two fats your body can't make and are therefore essential. Do I need to take pill supplements of these?

I use to take fish oil all the time. If your depression is really bad you might even notice an AD effect from it. I know I did. I think it works more like a stabilizer. If I'm not taking any medication at all I can feel the effects of the fish oil working on my mood. Plus this stuff is good for the hart.

Omegas are essential fatty acids which are necessary for healthy cardiovascular system also a healthy nervous system. I take 4000mg/day. I have not ran into anybody who can say that they manage mood disorders, depression, or anxiety, but I do believe that they play a vital role in overall wellbeing. Andrew Stoll M.D.,[Director of the Havard Psychopharmacology lab] has written a text written a text called The Omega-3 Connection. He claims that 1 to 2 grams/1000-2000mgs enhance health, mood and cognition, however, for mood disorders I have not found this to be true [even at the higher doses]. I take them purely for cardio health.
It is worth your time to read it, because it may help you or augment your current therapy. I am not a psychiatrist, but I do recommend them for some of my people.
Regards, MicroP.S. There are no harmful side effects due to fish oils. You may experience some Flatulence if you start taking them, but it is transient. Also, it is thought that vitamin E enhances omegas efficacy. Some are not as pure as others as well. Too fishy of an odor is a sign of poor product. They should only have a very faint odor!
Natures Way can be trusted.

Great answers thanks,
Also, do supplements work as well as food? I really hate fish and would rather take a supplement, but I have heard differents things on this subject.
Thanks

I'm a big fish-hater too. From what i understand, supplements (if you find a good one--a lot of drugstore brands are crummy) work better than trying to just eat a lot of stuff with omega-3's in it. Who would want to eat that much fish anyway?
In the past (for a few years) i took a therapeutic dose of 10 softgels of OmegaBrite (the best brand i'd found) omega-3 supplement a day and it helped me a lot with mood/depression/anxiety. However, i'm in college now and without my mom to put out tons of vitamins for me every morning i've been slacking on taking them (plus it's fairly expensive). Since i stopped taking them i saw a rebound of my depression and am now on effexor (sigh). If i could remember to take all the vitamins every day i probably wouldnt need the prescription drugs (when i was taking the fish oil i wasnt on any psych meds and did fine moodwise). Even at smaller doses than the 10 gels a day i was on you'd probably see improvements. Their website is:
also that andrew stoll book mentioned by someone else in this thread is a great resource.
If you decide to take the fish oil, supplementing yourself additionally with some B, E, and CoQ10 couldnt hurt, and some of those help the omega-3 work better in your system.
Good luck!
