Can anyone relate to this side effect (Lexapro?)

Posted by MarkD on March 3, 2004, at 8:03:40

took my first 10mg dose of lexapro yesterday and after 4 hours or so my anxiety symptoms seemed to fade pretty good, dont know if this is mind over matter or lexapro working that fast. But about 9 hours after taking the dose I had the strongest hot flashes that i ever had with any anxiety attack almost as if the effect of the hot flash was repressed by the lexapro but than came out all at once so many hours after taking the 10mg dose..

thank you in advance for your input and replies..

Mark

>I too am on 10mg of Lex. Experienced wicked hot flashes. Burning sensation in stomach chest to ears. It scared me so much I thought I was going to die. But my therapist said its common with this medication. It should subside. Try taking in the morning early. By night you should be ok.

Hi Mark,

I had hot flashes and night sweats during the first 2 wks that I was on 10 mgs of Lex. It will go away, in the meantime you might think about taking a small dose of Xanax. Lex can actually cause panic attacks or symptoms of panic attacks until your body adjusts to the medication.

I did this when I was taking zoloft. I think I was on the third or fourth day. I woke up feeling groggy, went to the bathroom. All of the sudden my stomach started cramping terribly and then I felt nauseas and then the horrible hot flash. It was from the top of my head to my stomach. My arms felt like they were on fire. I got to the sink and splashed cold water on my face and barely got to the bedroom. My legs felt like concrete posts. I layed on the bed and was fine after about 20 minutes of calming myself down. After I layed down most of it was just panic, but that hot flash was bad. It was the only time I have done it. I was on zoloft for 6 months and now on lexapro for 2 years.

Mark,
When I first began Lexapro, I had horrible hot flashes while sleeping. I would wake up soaked. BTW, I take Lex around 11 pm, and would have the hot flashes between 3 and 4 am. I wonder if it is a timing thing. This has gone away for the most part. I have found that when I start a project, I get carried away and get overheated, but I think that's more to do with being out of shape.

kellieann7 thank you very much for your reply yes this may be a timing issue and also my body getting use to the Lexapro, started taking the Lex in the morning now and the same thing happened about 5 to 6 hours later, not as strong a flash as the first time but its odd how it seems to be a 5-6 hour reaction...just going with it and relaxing more i realx through it and recognize it for what it is(Harmless) the less the attack lasts.., Lex is supposed to be a very good RX we shall see..

thank you again and good luck and God Bless!

Hello dzinegirl, yes thats exactly what i started to do yesterday morning, now on my third day of taking Lex...taking it first thing when i get up in the morning and still got a flash or two in the afternoon always 5 or 6 hours after taking the 10mg doze, but the flashes do not seem as strong now, just going with the flow here going with the feelings makes it much easier then being afraid of them,, all symptoms are harmless.....

thank you very much for your reply and info...
God bless..

Hi KathrynLex, thank you so much for your reply... yes just going with the flow here and giving it more time, started taking the 10mg in the morning, easier to go with the flashes in the daytime then at night when trying to drift off. they do seem to be a little less in intensity, now on my third day of Lex...

thank you again..God Bless

I also had night sweats and hot flashes when I first started taking Lexapro. Also experienced with dosages over 20mg so pdoc decreased to 20mg and they have stopped. Jenn
