My head felt like a ripe tomato ready to split. When my p-doc check my BP yesterday it was 161/115. She immediately cut my dosage in half to 75mg. Anyone know how long before my BP will go down? Just when I was feeling better - apart from the pounding of blood in my temples... and this is NOT helping my anxiety.

So far I am on 75mg effexor xr, 40mg buspar for anxiety, and ,25mg xanax. I was on inderal a long time ago. it makes all the women in my family cry - myself included. I just hope the old noggin stays in one piece.

If your blood pressure is borderline or near borderline anyway, you may want to consider adding an anti-hypertensive if the Effexor is working well otherwise. Drugs like this that block norepinephrine reuptake have the potential to raise BP. I would expect Strattera to also be problematic in this regard, and Cymbalta probably will be also.I've experienced this on tricyclics also, except with tricyclics, BP will tend to decrease at higher dosages because of the effect of their alpha-1 blockade. Some tricyclics such as nortriptyline tend to not even increase BP at all. My GP added the innocuous, inexpensive, and very effective ACE inhibitor lisinopril when my BP increased on desipramine from my normal 140/90 to 160/100. The lisinopril lowered my BP down to 125/80 almost immediately. At a higher dosage of desipramine, along with the lisinopril, my BP decreased to such an extent that I had to back off the lisinopril, as I was experiencing severe orthostatic hypotension with a resting BP of about 95/65.

I'm back to high normal 133/83 after 48 hours at 75mg effexor xr once a day.
This is the end of the thread.
