wow. i had completely forgotten about atarax. when i was a teenager, i used to pop atarax like candy for hives. i always felt itchy and "crawly" feeling from nerves. i remember it being a bit sedating, like benedryl. i was still nervous, but at least it kept me from scratching myself bloody. this link says that it's not meant for long term use. i took it for at least a few years, though, and didn't have any trouble coming off it. good luck.

Vistaril did nothing for my anxiety except make me sleepy and anxious. I was on it for 6 weeks with varying doses and it just doesn't work for me. I too am not a candidate for benzos due to addictive qualities. Currently am on buspar (30mg split dosage) and a teeny bit of xanax. Eventually the third med I am on (effexor xr) should have a better efect on the anxiety and I'll be able to taper off the others.
Of course, everyone is different; but I haven't heard of many people who had relief from vistaril.

Vistaril & Atarax are both hydroxyzine, an antihistamine/tranquilizer. They are just made by different manufacturers hence the different trade names.

I'm not surprised they aren't helping your panic. I tried Vistaril for generalized anxiety once, and it made me sleepy--but not less anxious. For panic, you really need a benzo like Xanax or Klonopin. I've also heard that Nardil is good for panic.

That is exactly how I feel-it makes me 'SLEEPY' with a "bubbled headed" feeling- a whirling tornato inside me leading up to me throat! (how I explain PANIC)

The technical difference is that one is the pamoate salt and one is the hydrochloride salt (I think Vistaril is the pamoate). They have identical effects. This was done so that they could market the same product to two different audiences. How helpful!
