What are the best meds for Ptsd

Posted by shadows721 on February 10, 2004, at 19:27:36

Can anyone share what med(s) helped them with Ptsd. I take Lexapro 10 mg., Buspar 90 mg., Neurontin 200 mg., and Sequal (?)25 mg.

I still have terrible anxiety. Doc asked if I wanted to take Celexa? Is it really different? I refused to take Paxil and Remeron due to weight issues. I turned down Effexor too. I said that drug has too short of half life to deal with for me. I don't want a drug that I feel like hell if I miss a pill. What else is there? Benzo? I've been down that road too. I got physically dependent on them. I feel so disfunctional. Are there any alternatives here?

I think that raising the Lexapro dose to 20 mg would help with your anxiety. I take 30 mg and it works well for my anxiety as well as depression.

If that fails, you might want to see if your doc will give you Strattera (I can never remember how to spell this drug). It's for ADD, but it calms people down.

Good EMDR therapy is worth every penny for PTSD and will blow pharmacotherapy out of the water. I suggest you drastically increase your Neurontin dose if you want relief through drugs. Great options are marijuana or MDMA with psychotherapy (I am totally serious), but you're not going to find a practitioner using that, heh.

Other things that are promising are valproate, carbamazepine, and tiagabine--and probably more. I'm not too familiar with this disorder, but I know that my girlfriend had PTSD and got complete remission with something like 3 months of EMDR therapy. And the bonus was that she actually felt CLOSURE instead of just drug effect.

I take zyprexa, celexa, wellbutrin for PTSD. The zyprexa works the best out of all. I've been taking it for 5 years. Makes me feel great.

i have also heard good things about emdr, although i haven't tried it. after seven years, i'm down to occasional xanax, having recently withdrawn from effexor.

ptsd is a long difficult road, i'm not saying i'm over it. and i agree that you must find peace within yourself. drugs are important to the treatment, but they won't cure you!

as for the effexor - i hate that drug. it made me a zombie. i don't think anyone should take it except as a last resort. just my opinion....
