Well...it does seem strange that he's trying this even though you're not bipolar. BUT he may just be ahead of the curve. Depakote can work really well for dysphoric mania/mixed states. I know some pdocs in my area have been successfully using Neurontin, also a "mood stabilizer" like Depakote, for treatment of anxiety. I was on Depakote last year and found it definitely mentally relaxing, with and without Nardil. If it's to treat anxiety/SP, you might even be able to get away with a really low dose and thus avoid any side-effects!
Good luck,
KM

He gives it, because its a gabaergic drug. Somewhat similar to a benzo (tranquilizer). I also thought about it, but I also do take Lamictal and this two dont mix very well.

good luck with it.

greetings to mexico!

Tepiaca,

Yes, unfortunately I did have some unwanted weight gain on this combination, 15lbs or so. But I also had some other really bizarre medical things going on at the time that were not related to the meds, so cause and effect were somewhat blurred. I stopped it because...well...umm...that's also a little blurry...I guess you could say I'm a classic bipolar sometimess and I had convinced myself that I no longer needed any meds! Not a very good reason, I'm still learning =?
km
P.S. Did your doc give you the usual blood work that goes along with monitoring the valproic acid? It helped me find a dose that was optimal and it did effect my liver, so it's a good idea to monitor. I think most docs do a valproic acid levels check, a liver panel, and a cbc after a week or two.

I cant help you to do some conclusions. Its just your 2nd day on it. If its still this way after a few weeks on a stable dose, I would quit it. In my opinion its much too early to draw any conclusions at all. Epival does much more than just increasing gaba. It also blocks Na channels etc. ...
I guess you feel the antimaniac effect of it.

just an example:

...valproic acid (VPA), has a very wide spectrum of clinical activity ...

"Valproate modifies spontaneous excitation and inhibition at cortical synapses in vitro."

Hmm, I found something interesting

"Valproate and carbamazepine increase prefrontal dopamine release by 5-HT1A receptor activation."

Maybe its because of dopamine release.
